I always thought they said that the reason Honky Tonk got the IC title was because Butch Reed missed the show? Or was it because he arrived late? According to Reed in a shoot interview it was because he no-showed a few events leading up to this. I could swear on his podcast Bruce Prichard has said Reed was never in consideration, but Bruce changes his stories sometimes weekly. I actually just got done listening to a Honky shoot where he talked about this. Reed no showed the night he was supposed to go over Steamboat. Honky is walking down the hallway, Vince and Hogan see him and the rest is history. According to Honky, this celebration took place the night after he won the belt. |

These are all so great!
It's really too bad Gorilla couldn't do anything for Wrestlemania IX. Did he even get any air time other than the Coliseum Video backstage segment?
I also don't think we will ever know the true story behind Reed/Honky/Steamboat unless Vince were to tell it himself and even then it would be suspect. Honky was way hotter than Reed on the heel side back then. Even if the IC title run was meant as transitional, which didn't happen and HTM got a long run, Butch wouldn't be the guy for that. Butch was a great guy and a true tough guy but not necessarily someone meant for the second top title.
