If you read the BBC news article you know exactly WHY they're doing it.
They've also not announced which lines will be effected yet. So this is a non story.

Basic Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars won't be affected. I can see the premium lines going up in price since they have metal bases, rubber tires and clear coats on the paint
