Tonight marks the 30th anniversary of SummerSlam 1991. An event that offered a match made in heaven along with a match made in hell. However, besides the anniversary milestone, this event almost feels like the end of the original Hulkamania Era that launched pro wrestling into the mainstream in the mid 80s.
Looking back at this event and the roster, especially compared to what the company would look like just one year later, it really feels like this PPV was the official transition into a new generation of WWF programming. Warrior would be gone and Hogan was being phased out as well. Many of the familiar midcard faces of the time would also disappear in the coming months.
It really is always hard to decipher when a certain period starts or ends especially in the wild pro wrestling world. SummerSlam 1991 really feels like the end of an era.

Totally agree. Summerslam 1991 was the end of the Hulkamania Era with the Ultimate Warrior getting fired after the show and Hogan leaving to make movies. I started losing interest in WWF afterwards but WCW and GWF kept my interest in wrestling alive.

I started losing interest in WWF afterwards but WCW and GWF kept my interest in wrestling alive. I guess that's kind of what I'm looking for. People who were watching at the time especially. Did it feel like there was a big shift after that event? Hogan and Warrior were gone it had to feel like a totally new WWF.

I would say Ric Flair became the face of the company during this period and him putting over Bret Hart ushered in the New Generation Era.

I always feel like Mania 8 was the official end of the Hulk era, but I can see a case being made that SSlam 91 was the beginning of the end. I definitely started losing interest around that time and totally stopped watching shortly after Mania.

agreed! but kinda felt like survivor series 91 still had the last bit of hulkamania feel to it as well. but that was def the last ppv i felt that way. with flair & sid coming over and warrior leaving it def felt like end of hulkamania.

I've always seen this as the beginning of the end, and WrestleMania VIII as the end of the end.
The fans were rejecting Hogan, and they were getting more vocal about it too. If you go back and watch Hogan's comeback in 1993, he just looked so out of place.

For me it's Survivors Series 91. Everything felt much different after that to me...but I absolutely agree with most points about SSlam 91

To me Summerslam 92 was the true launch of the new gen. Bret main events, and it’s the first ppv without Hogan.

To me WM8 was the end of the “Hulkamania” era. Then the company seemed to be in a weird limbo period until Bret won the belt, kicking off the new gen IMO.
