OBLIGATORY: A bit of a lengthy read. Feel free to pass by if it's too much. To start, I am aware that there are probably variations (and maybe even exact) topics like this one posted on the board before. That being said, similar to threads such as playing with figures, hiding the hobby from others, etc... it's a fluid topic in which people's opinions can change over time. So between that and the getting opinions from others who didn't post before, a new thread seems okay. Anyways, here's where I'm at. I collect a lot shyt. WWE, NECA, Mezco, Storm Collectibles, etc. I've been kinda downsizing a bit. For starters, I sold and/or gave away a lot various figures and playsets that I don't really need. Hell, some of the crap I have no idea why I bought in the first place. It's admittedly been a pain in the ass. Also, now that I'm older and have my own money (and thankfully enough money that I have a healthy amount of income for my fun stuff such as this), I obviously buy more of the afrorementioned shyt. In addition, due to the OCD collector in me, I tend to buy doubles of everything. One to open and one to display or play with (playing only applies to WWE and honestly haven't really played with figures in over 15 years when I was a teenager, but I like to keep the idea open). So after binging on a lot of stuff this past month, I just have boxes of figures, shelves of opened figures, and money spent. Again, it's money I have to spend. But that doesn't mean it's a great choice. Also, I had a figure shelf that got really dusty. I got lazy and stopped dusting and cleaning it every week. Surely enough, it was quite an ordeal cleaning and getting it back to where I wanted it to be. It made me realize that not only do these plastics wads sit on a shelf that no one really sees but me, but the maintenance is actually kinda high. And lately, I'm stressing keeping up with what's coming out. It's also stressful hoping a certain thing is coming out. For instance, Storm Collectibles Mortal Kombat. I have no idea if they are going to make the female ninjas. Also, even though I'm 99% certain an Ultimate Razor Ramon is on its way, I hate not knowing. Then there's the figures I have that I CANNOT part with, even though I kind of want to. I have a a couple collectibles that are REALLY hard and expensive to get a hold of nowadays. I don't need them as much as I did... but I feel I would regret it forever if I sold them. I hate being tied to them. Part of me recently wanted to sell off everything and have like one shelf (not multiple levels, literally just one shelf) of collectibles. Maybe like 8-10 figures max. Like three from video games. Three from TV. And the rest from movies. Like a "less is more" type collection. Efficient. Just to move on and stop worrying so much. Sorry this thread is all over the place. Anyways, does anyone else get this feeling or something similar? I LOVE YOU

Yeah my response doesn’t change. They’re toys. If they’re stressing you out and not bringing you joy then part ways. You can say you want to sell everything and have one shelf, but how long is that gonna last. This hobby can seem like a drug addiction at times, and while it doesn’t physically deteriorate your body/mind, some people make it sound like it does effect their mental health.
I do think about who is gonna have to go through all this crap when I die…oh well their problem. Or just bury me with them…

I was happy with the one shelf idea for like... a day? Then I looked at my unopened Motaro figure and was like how can I not open this? It really is like a drug. I love you.

without fully reading through the thread...
i buy the figures i like if its easy to do. if i'm able to get a figure i like, awesome. if i miss out on something, oh well.
this stuff is just a hobby i semi keep up with because wrestling and action figures...and by default, wrestling figures..have been a part of my life for as long as i can remember. but i don't take it very seriously anymore. the second i get too serious about it will be the moment i decide to sell off every action figure i own

Short answer - Definitely. Collecting is overwhelming especially for those like me that have ocd and/or dislike clutter.
Long answer - I stopped collecting around 2005 (20 years old) and started back up around 2015 (30 years old). I’ve collected moc basically my entire life (since I was about 8) so have dozens of boxes full of unopened figures. They end up in an attic or closet out of sight/mind.
Back around 2013/14 before getting back into it, I was kinda tired of having so much crap and debated dropping them off for donation and being done with it all. I ended up selling 20 or so classic superstars recently to clear out some space which felt great, but still have tons of WWF, Star Wars, marvel, etc.
As I started collecting again in 2015, I realized I wanted to be much more selective and limit myself to stuff I REALLY wanted. I’ve got about half a dozen black series helmets/sabers, 20 funko pops, 20 wwe figures, and a handful of various other favorites. Ultimate Edition is the only line I truly collect at the moment (and first since Classic Superstars). Collecting over the last few years has quickly added up and even tho I’ve sold some off, I’ve brought in even more!
My plan ultimately is to display a handful of my favorite collectibles (including 1 or 2 detolfs of figures) in a game/tv room and will likely end up selling off the other stuff that doesn’t make the cut.

I wouldn't say I'm overwhelmed, but I'm frustrated by the online pre-order system, lack of product on the shelves, bad "guidance" and bad communication. Not overwhelmed, but I'm frustrated. I generally like the products, but the messaging and the distribution are bad and just not working. The way case packs are done isn't working. Exclusives aren't working. Availability isn't working. It's frustrating.
Chase figures are one thing. But if there's a figure I want, I should be able to get it.

For starters, I collect LEGO, Marvel Legends, Funko Pops, and WWE/AEW figures.
I used to be overwhelmed when I was first starting to ramp up my collections around 2018/2019, but I've since gotten raises/new jobs/etc that I've been able to catch up to where I want to be (for the most part) in each of my collections. I have just started to lose interest in Funko Pops though, and have significantly started to slow down on those, basically only collecting MCU/DCEU now.

Two things for me. Spending too much and not being able to plan spending when it comes to presales and adding to a growing list of needed figures.
Especially lately when preorders for ue warrior, ue hulk, the new Gen arena, and now ue kane, ue taker, new Elite series on rsc, rock n sock connection. When a preorder comes out of nowhere you can feel overwhelmed when trying to budget money by paycheck and everything comes out at the same time.
I used to only collect a small window of time wrestlemania 4 through wrestlemabia 7. Now it's 1984 so slaughter and iron shiek through summerslam 95 and a select group of attitude era. Every added era means more in between guys I feel I need to add to the collection I didnt think o needed before.

I totally understand it becoming overwhelming when collecting so many lines. I only collect WWE and although I wouldn't say I'm overwhelmed I would definitely appreciate not having to keep up to date with forums/social media regularly in case I miss a surprise drop or pre order etc.
In that sense it becomes a bit more of a chore than a hobby at times.

I have severely limited myself on what to get. Now I’m just doing WWE and Marvel Legends of certain comic versions of certain eras that I grew up with and are familiar to me. I think now that WWE has been firing so many people that I liked and bringing in people I’ve never heard of, that I’m not interested in buying the figures of the newer people. I don’t really watch WWE since the pandemic because the shows are unwatchable, so I’m not going to get invested in the new wrestlers. That Escobar guy? I have no clue who that is. I’ll probably buy him solely for the belt. Bronson Reed? No idea who that is.
So now I’m sticking to classic wrestlers I know and maybe some updated versions of gimmicks for guys I like. And if someone I don’t know comes with an updated belt I don’t have, I’ll pick them up for the belt.

I am becoming a little overwhelmed because there's so many coming out that I would like, but I'm also frustrated because of the costs involved for a non-American collector. At this point I'm just trying to limit myself to UEs and Ringside Exclusives of classic wrestlers.

The only time Im overwhelmed is around SDCC because so many figures are released at once and my wallet, as well as my wife, hate me. Other than that, I'm good the rest of the year.

Having just started collecting figs, I’m yet to get into the regular groove of releases to determine the regularity at which they’ll be released but I’m conscious by starting with UE’s, I need to be quicker than most to ensure I get what I want.

I can definitely relate. When I started collecting, I kept myself on a pretty tight budget and was pretty selective with what and when I bought. I don't think I paid full retail for a single figure in my first year or two of collecting. A a couple of upward job changes, raises, etc, and I'm fortunate to not have to give much thought to the impact my buying has on finances. But it's been a slippery slope - jumping into Marvel, Star Wars, GI Joe lines, and not being super selective with what I bought in any of those lines. And buying anything wrestling-wise that catches my eye, even if it's not a "must have." I bought full waves of ML to complete a BAF of a character I'd never even heard of. More Clone Troopers than I know the name of. And Mattel keeps sucking me into buying my 7th Nash or 15th Warrior.
I'm the point where I have more than I can display in the way I'd like. And while I still love collecting, it's definitely overwhelming at times. My buying will stack up and I find myself with a stack of figures sitting around waiting to be opened. And while it's not money I need, or even would use, elsewhere, it's also sort of silly to look at a pile of toys I haven't even cared to open or display and to count up the costs. Or what the resale value would be even on my loose collection.
This really does feel like a golden age of figure collecting with the quality and range of lines available, a fairly uniform scale and style in wrestling, and some daydream level collectors items from Mattel Creations and Haslab. But my display space is finite, and I'm already here with over a dozen figures each of guys like Warrior, Savage, and HBK. I'm still not sure what the right answer is for me, and I have a hard time seeing myself parting with any significant chunk of my collection. But I can definitely relate with how you're feeling.

if you think cost is an issue , well they just went up in price. paying upwards of $25 per elite and $35 for UE. i cant imagine buying 2 just to keep MOC and open one..lol. not sure how some of you afford/do this. especially if your buying every elite , every series. etc...
times are only gonna get tougher...inflation is rising everywhere...i suggest re-group and figure out if you wanna keep doing this. getting older and moving on , isnt always a bad thing.

Read every word and I am completely were you are as well. With the boxes and the dust and trying not to miss out on things I collect from other genres. I also buy two of each item most of the time. More if I want to customize. Things are being released faster and faster right now and as much as I am trying to limit what I am buying it just keeps snowballing. With Target already raising prices on their website for in stock items that will make things a bit trickier. Being in Canada already doesn't help as we don't get everything as it is, so the items I order are US price+currency exchange+shipping. An UE came out to almost $60 CAD before the price bump.
But more so that what I do collect arrives quicker and quicker leaving boxes of things less time to be appreciated and even less time to be displayed in any proper and dedicated way. If my stacked up Funko wall (in protective cases) ever tumbles they will never find me with that and the Lego, wrestling, Marvel and DC stuff I have around.

I do think there are an overwhelming amount of figures being released, particularly for people who like to collect everything. Or two of everything. Or even those who just like a lot of things. I could fill many online shopping carts with products from properties I've enjoyed in my life, but luckily I was raised to be deeply ashamed of spending money and/or liking things, so I've set my bar high. Loves not likes. Avoid 'collections' that demand buying everything of something. It's tough though, especially when each toy is only £20.
My 'I have too much' panic alarm goes off quite often, so I try to make curating as much a part of the collection as buying things. Reorganizing. Reassessing. Trimming the fat. Whenever I think I have too much stuff, I pop my 2-3 least liked items on eBay, and it makes things better. As long as you live in a small country where shipping costs are reasonable. That's my advice to anyone feeling the weight of the plastic around them. Don't panic. Just pick a few things you don't think you'd miss and get rid of them. You can't take it all with you. I am also in a fairly morbid mood lately. Several deaths. Colleagues. Neighbour. Not to mention the wrestlers. It puts toy collecting in perspective, as I hit an age where I need to have at least one eye on retirement.
