A debate between me and my friends - who is right?
I remember Punk being very over before the pipebomb ever happened. He was given a run (albeit short) with the World Title and the crowd popped big for him cashing in MITB. He was scheduled to win both the 2008 and 2011 Royal Rumble matches before plans changed. He was the face of the ECW brand. IC and Tag Team Champ.
My friends believe that the pipebomb is when people started to get behind Punk but I donβt agree. It was the momentum shifter to get WWE behind him more but he already had that fan base.
Opinions?

Wasn't Punk over pretty much from day one of his ECW run?

He was over. Despite his stop start booking etc he was very over as a heel & face ever since his ECW run.

Uh.... yeah... he was.
Go back and watch CM Punk cashing in the MITB on World Champion Edge on Raw in 2008. The dude was over.

He put the ECW brand on his back from 07 to 08. He was the shows MVP during that time. Sadly he got wing clipped when they rushed to get the world strap off him to insert it into the Jericho HBK feud which just did not need it.

I don't know about that. That ladder match with HBK vs. Jericho for the World Title at No Mercy 2008 was incredible.
I think they did the right thing with taking the belt off Punk then. They had him lose the title without actually losing the title, because he got beat up and couldn't be in that scramble match at the PPV before. It kept Punk from losing any momentum in a sense.

And if they had of kept the belt on Punk & added the IC title so they could do the ladder match. HBK woulda been like "who did I piss off."

Well for me, HBK was the better performer overall compared to Punk. So I was okay with HBK being in a World Title match with Jericho than I was with Punk keeping the World Title to have mid card matches with the likes of JBL and Batista for the World Title. At least HBK and Jericho were the actual main event at No Mercy for the World Title.

I took the question as "was Punk as over pre-pipe bomb as he was post-pipe bomb?".
If that is indeed the question. I'd say not quite. He definitely got significant momentum since 2011.
He was over before it, but was on a level similar to Jericho in 2003-2005 I'd say. Whereas post 2011, he was over more than Jericho 1999-2001. If that makes sense.

Punk was always over. He was just a made man with the audience. He got over with casual fans and already had a lot of die hard fans hooked because of his indy background and style. There's a reason why we won the MITB twice.

I do know about that and Shawn-Jericho did NOT need the world title in any way, shape, or form.

Shawn and Jericho still would have been the main event, and a ladder match was perfect. To have a ladder match, you need a Title hanging for said match.
So we got a great ladder match for the World Title, instead of CM Punk defending the World Title against Kane in the middle of the show, with HBK vs. Jericho still being the last match of the card.
Just enjoy the match and the fact it was for the World Title. It's okay that Punk lost the World Title back in 2008.
