For some reason Mattel are making so many mistakes at the moment. Does anyone think there’s too much product and they’re rushing things through? I’m sure more mistakes/crap choices are happening these days.
Just off the top of my head -
- Vince elite being as tall as Hogan - Roddy Piper face and wrong kilt - Million Dollar Man being as short as Rey Mysterio - Rocky Johnson too dark skin tone - Razor Ramon yellow details on attire instead of gold - Sgt Slaughter jacket too short - Bret WCW salmon - Bret Face - Bret hair - painted skin on almost all singlet elites compared to molded 4-5 years ago. - Kane Ultimate edition painted arm! - Undertaker legends short hair at the front. - Paul Orndorf too tall (original legends was perfect - why change?) - Macho man Legends lazy triangle cut purple shirts.
When I look back at older figures - like original legends, it just looks like more care was put in. Maybe I’m in the minority but I’d actually prefer less product at a higher quality.
These figures aren’t cheap especially as most people internationally are paying £40+ off eBay for legends figures.
What does everyone else think?

I think we’re getting there with Bret. The face sculpts that they’ve got right unfortunately were let down with the hair sculpt.

none of those are quality control issues. they’re design issues

Some of these sound like purposeful design decisions.

We do this like once a week. Get a loan, get some licenses in place, and make your own figures. Show em how it's done.
My guess is half the people here would be complaining about how awful you're doing, probably once a week.
They're better than any other company has ever done with wrestling figures. Take it, or leave it.

People have been complaining about parts, scale, accuracy, likeness, etc from the start of the line. Nothing has changed. Some figs nail it, some miss the mark, some are trash.

Whatevski
It’s been pretty crappy lately but I overall don’t care as much anymore so it doesn’t bother me. Maybe I just won’t buy it

You mention the Kane Ultimate Edition painted arm, but good lord, it's the mask missing paint that's the issue there. How do you make a mess of that and still think it's okay to release it as a 'premium' figure (and they let the same mistake slide on both of his masks/scans in the pack!). Crazy for a 'premium' figure.
I also find Mattel far too fond of rubber for accessories that should be cloth instead. At least Jakks got that one right. Putting moulded rubber jackets, shirts, robes, etc. that make the figure immovable.. it's just silly.

An actual recent QC issue seems to be Brutus' missing eyebrow. Judging from pics I've seen online most have that issue than dont have it.
Orndorff being too tall is so annoying when they got it right the first time lol. To offset that I have mine posed in that bodybuilding most-muscular pose he used to do. Works good enough.

Is the Mattel/WWE contract due anytime soon?
Mattel seem to be doing a good job in general, but they do make a lot of mistakes. That said, I think anyone that was present for the start of their takeover from Jakks, can tell their was a lot more pride in the work back then. Perhaps they were under immense pressure to impress WWE back in the early days, and it's possible they have just relaxed a bit now, but the difference coming from Jakks (especially the embarrassing end of their run, when they had clearly given up altogether) to Mattel at the start of Mattel's run, was huge.
I didn't start collecting Mattel as I figured I was done with collecting rasslin' stuff, but some of their really good figures caught my eye when I'd pop into toy shops to get Christmas gifts and such over the years and slowly I've been dragged back in. Now that I'm making more of an effort to try and get a few figures I want, I notice that the earlier stuff seems a lot better than the newer stuff. Whether it be cost-cutting or apathy, there's definitely a slip in the quality.
The Ultimate Kane coming out (a premium product, priced higher than others) with paint issues on his arm AND mask is not a good look at all. It's pretty shoddy, and points more to a lack of interest, than to cheaping out.

I think it has everything to do with the break neck speed with which everything seems to come out.
I notice at retail WWE is the only product line (and MCfarlane to be fair) that consistently has new waves of product coming out.
As opposed to Hasbro's various lines, which has better QC, but maybe has a new wave come out every few months if we're lucky.

Hasbro Lightning collection releases new main line waves every quarter and has QC issues out the yinyang.

I don’t mind a mistake here and there because it’s bound to happen. It’s just annoying when it’s a figure that we’ll only have one chance of getting ala WCW Bret who’s pink is way off. Even something like the new neon stage having missing colors. There should be no way why a $250 product should be missing those details, even if it came to budgeting. There should of been a work around. The Kane arm issue didn’t bother me until I realized that one, I pose my figures and like to take pictures of them and two, even if you tried to fix it you’ll run into other issues. You cannot take off the arms and sand it due to the joints being painless and it might be prone to paint chip. Chances of Mattel fixing this are slim to none.

Quality control has definitely been on a steady decline. Every other fig I get has an issue. They didn’t even paint the pupils or the iris’ on my warlords eyes.

My UE Kane was missing his right wrist gauntlet! I have also had several issues in the past year. However, Mattel has always made good on fixing the issue one way for the other. I have to give their corporate credit for their due diligence. Their distribution on the other hand is another story. As far as products go they are good but certainly not without their fair share of flaws. Such is life.

I don’t think you understand what “quality control” means. Except Kane’s arm, none of these are QC issues. 99% of your examples are purposeful design choices. I’m not saying that they are all good design choices, but they are not QC issues.

Of the two major toy companies (Mattel & Hasbro) I’ve had more Q/C issues with Hasbro’s. I also feel Mattel is better than Neca, Jazwares, Lanard & Bandai.
Q/C issues would be things like poorly painted figures such as the face being misaligned or big blotches of paint on parts it shouldn’t be. Fused parts. Parts put on backwards. Figures/parts being broken in the package.

My Big John Studd looks annoyed constantly. His eyes are in a perfect eye roll, which I suppose I can live with since I still have the Heenan Family version which is better without the truefx. Those truefx applications are spotty at best.
As for design choices, the only one I have a problem with is that they’re making post-1996 Hogan figures way too small. He really should have at least the DM Hogan body and Lesnar arms. The new E91 Hogan basically reuses the top half of the HOF Hogan, which was also too small even though Hogan was smaller then. Even with the 80s Hogans the case could be made for using the Ringside Lesnar body with taller lower legs or boots.

Most of these are relatively minor issues, especially with a mass retail product. This isnt NECA or Storm Collectibles.
