He was booked to win King of Ring but after the curtain call he had to pay his dues and work his way back up and Stone Cold won King of the Ring
If HHH won it do you think he just would have gotten to the top faster?
Would he still have joined DX?

I think we can all be thankful for the curtain call, personally. In hindsight it was the best thing to happen.
Hypothetically speaking, where would Austin have went from here is a better question but we'll stick with Triple H. He's said before that he was scheduled to go straight into a title program with Shawn so the DX route might never have happened had they have him beat Shawn. With both being best friends and been quoted as saying they wanted to do the "group thing", it probably still would have happened though. I can't imagine the HHH character would have had a lot of legs in the main event scene, but we'll never know. The way he went from DX to main event was almost perfectly done and I don't imagine going to the main event in the character he had in 1996 would have worked.

He was trying to be like the great William Regal in 1996.

I am guessing that Triple H would beat Ahmed Johnson for the IC Title either at SummerSlam or the PPV right after.
I honestly don't think Triple H's career got as side tracked as the WWE and Triple H make it seem like it when re-telling that story.
To look back at it, he misses King of the Ring, he misses the July IYH PPV, he misses SummerSlam, and he misses September IYH PPV. He returns in October to put over Austin in the opening match of the PPV, and then the following night wins the IC Title off Mero on Raw.
So honestly?? It seemed whatever was meant for Triple H did eventually happen that year, just without the KOTR win. However, he got that in 1997, and honestly it was more fitting for him that year to have it than it would have been for the 1996 win.

Not sure where he would have fit in the title picture in 1996. It seemed that Vince was very big on Vader that year and he was scheduled to work with Shawn from KOTR96 thru RR97. If Triple H did get a match with Shawn, it most likely would have been a one-off PPV match like the one Shawn had with Mankind. Let's just thank the wrestling Gods that the curtain call happened and Austin was chosen to win the KOTR, I can't imagine the WWF in late 1996 and throughout 1997 without the Austin/Bret feud.

I don’t see HHH rising up the card any faster than he did. 1996 wasn’t his year and I don’t see him fitting into the title picture no matter how much politicking HBK pulled.
Contrary to what the WWE tries to spin, Austin didn’t become a house hold name after winning KOTR. It took months before he started to catch on as a top heel with the fans. If Austin doesn’t win KOTR, I still see him rising up the card and working with Bret. Bret mentioned in his book that he always respected Steve as a worker and that he was the guy he wanted to work with when he returned. I don’t see that changing.

Austin really took off with his promo style, his attack on an injured Brian Pillman, and his feud with Bret Hart. The KOTR was a big moment for him and gave us one of the best promos/lines ever. Also, I agree that HHH wasn't quite ready in 1996 and most of 1997.

Bret handpicked Austin to work with some overseas house shows before he came back properly to TV, and he was getting that Survivor Series 96 program either way. Austin would have been a household name after WM13 with or without KOTR for sure. HHH was never going to be able to step out into the main event scene while he was standing behind Shawn. It took Shawn going and taking the leadership spot in DX to start to change the way fans saw him.
