I guess if they were going to continue his storyline with Bret during the match it would have made some sense, but why was Owen in this match? He just turned on Bret earlier in the show and was obviously getting a major push as a top heel in a major storyline.
For people who may not know, Owen was in the Rumble match and his role was merely one of the many guys fed to Diesel.

Owen was a guy who could be eliminated quickly and not lose any steam, after he officially turned heel. In 1995 it further a storyline to have him eliminated in super fast.

I liked it actually. It made it seem that Owen had no intentions on turning on Bret and then he did so, and boom, he's early in the rumble and eliminated without coming anywhere near his brother or any top level star at the time. Owen as seen as less than Bret, that was the entire story line at first. Until Owen beat Bret at Wrestlemania X did people finally notice Owen as a superstar.

Plus, I think they were low on talent and needed him in the match. Bret, Owen, Tatanka, and Bam Bam all pulled double duty that night.

I love the angry facial expression he made when he came down to the ring during the Rumble with Dibiase saying ''I got to applaud again''.
Just added more to the awesome turn earlier in the night.

I've gotta say, I actually enjoyed DiBiase and Vince as the announce team for this event. I would have liked to see DiBiase and Vince do more.

Yeah I always thought DiBiase was underrated in the booth. Another guy who transitioned well from the mat to the mic IMO I enjoyed the hell outta the run he had with Gorilla on Challenge in 94/5

1i993 - blows out knee when Yokozuna tosses him out of the ring
1994 - gets fed to Diesel
1995 - lasts like 4 seconds in the Rumble because when he enters, Bulldog clotheslines him out of it
1996 - had a better showing but was used to just help HBK get over
1997 - did alright
1998 - Triple H and Chyna got the best of him even though they weren't in the Rumble
1999 - was part of the final 4 so that's cool
He definitely had more horrible moments than good when it comes to the Royal Rumble match

And to top it off they had King rip on em on commentary for falling when he was running to the back

Two guys out of basically 5 who could believably win and they last less than 10 seconds between them.

Other than himself and his own pleasure, I doubt Vince cared about anyone else at that Rumble except a fake blonde with fake boobs, a former NFL player known for his drug addiction and of course, his boy toy.
That rumble event probably showed off the worst of the worst of WWF during the 1990s and who was showcased showed the way Vince thinks and acts. I always thought Pat Patterson had a hand in the way eliminations go but ultimately it's Vince being OK with whatever Pat did. I do think the Backlund and Owen eliminations helped the storyline a little but that Rumble match was in desperate need of star power. I think only Lex, Backlund, Owen, Bulldog and Shawn were the only ones really over.

I don't think Jeff Jarrett was a fake blonde or had fake boobs....
