So just like the thread on here about tag champions, let's do an IC Title one too!
Here are my 5 picks in no particular order...
1. Jimmy Snuka - Looking back to 1983, how is it that Jimmy Snuka wasn't the one to end the Magnificent Muraco's IC Title reign?! Tito Santana did and it was kind of out of nowhere it seemed. It was strange that Snuka didn't get an IC Title reign.
2. Rick Martel - The Model came close in 1993 with being the final 2 wrestlers along with Razor Ramon, but sadly it was not to be for Rick Martel. He would have made a great IC Champion though!
3. Crush - In 1993 it seemed like Crush was going to be the one to defeat Shawn Michaels in the spring of that year, but Crush failed to do such thanks to interference from Doink the Clown.
4. Tatanka - Same year, in 1993, Tatanka seemed like he was the one to defeat Shawn Michaels that winter, but failed to do so and then ended up feuding with Bam Bam Bigelow.
5. I.R.S. - Poor Irwin, couldn't upset Razor Ramon for the IC Title in late 1993 or early 1994 and then did nothing title related after that.
So those are my five picks for IC Title contenders who never won the IC Title. Who does everyone else have as their picks??

Martel- REALLY wish he got a run
Boss Man- It wouldve been nice to see him win it at WM VII. Feel good moment to end the feud with the Family
Crush- Not his biggest fan but he definitely deserved a run in 93. Was over like rover.Shaka Brah!
Beefcake- Again not a big fan but man did he get screwed in this deal
Tatanka- Another like Crush who shoulve got a run in 93

Ahhh crap, how did I forget Brutus Beefcake?!?!
I remember wanting him to win in 1988 and 1990.... but to be fair, I have had a few "pops" tonight so my mind is a bit out of the loop.
But yes, Brutus should have been IC Champion, 100%!!

Brutus Beefcake.
Conrad Thompson etc hate that he ended Hennig's unbeaten run and was scheduled to beat him for the IC strap and cant understand why. All I can say is that they must be deaf. From Beefcakes turn in 1987 until his horrific injury in 1990? The guy was over like crazy..easily a top 5 babyface in the company. His run was scheduled to last until RR91 I believe and I'm genuinely sorry it didn't happen.
Rick Martel.
Was absolutely tailor made for an IC run....where is the question? But there's no mistaking...he would have been great.
123 Kid/X pac.
I think the 123 Kid getting an underdog run as the champ h would have really done wonders for him and created a bit of drama around the belt. Question is when though...but he definately should have gotten a run as X Pac.
Tatanka.
I think a run here for him in 1993 would have done him & HBK good...
Taz.
I think Taz should have been feuding with the Radicalz alongside Jericho and been in the IC title mix. He would have been a better candidate than some of the wasters who held the belt in 2000.

So in regards about the 123 Kid...
After Wrestlemania, the 123 Kid vs. Jeff Jarrett was supposed to take place on Action Zone for the IC Title, but Kid was injured so Bob Holly took his place. Bob Holly then won the IC Title from Jarrett but the referee held up the title and had a rematch the following week and Jarrett beat Holly to become a 2 time IC Champion. So my guess is, is that the same scenario would have happened with the 123 Kid if he had been healthy.

Yes...that rings a bell now.

This is hard to call as for me from Rude's reign all the way to Razors last title I think they booked the IC belt near perfectly in my opinion.
Anyway, there are a few times I feel that it could have changed hand.
Crush: Not getting his revenge on Doink and losing the match to Shawn Michaels at the 1993 King of the Ring killed all the momentum that Crush had. Say what you want, but I think Crush was super over in 92 and early 93 and this really killed him.
Tatanka: Tatanka was another guy that was very over and I think him winning the title off Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania IX would have been good, even if he lost it soon after.
To be fair none of these were going to happen as nothing was getting that belt of Shawn Michaels during this time.

some of the guys you all mentioned are people that I’m genuinely sitting here thinking, like, how DIDN’T they get a run with it? Seriously, Tatanka didn’t win it? I can’t say I can picture him with the IC title around his waste but I just assumed when he was feuding with Shawn, he won it at some point haha.
I don’t know that I have 5 but here are some of mine…
My go to is Jake the Snake although I would’ve enjoyed a WWF title run more, especially in ‘92 when he was feuding with Savage. (had he stuck around past Mania 8). But around the time he was feuding with Rude, it’s hard to believe he never won the IC title.
Narcissist Lex Luger would’ve been a TYPICAL heel champion, especially an IC in the vain of a Mr Perfect & then he should have won the big one as MADE in the USA Lex, but that’s another topic haha

1. Rick Martel - though, it is hard to find a place for him. 1990 would have been great, but that was Mr. Perfect's reign. I wouldn't want that to change. 1993 is probably the best option, but it would have been a short reign. He could have been the one to take it off of Davey Boy in 1992, then feuded with HBK and dropped the title to him or Tatanka. 2. Brutus Beefcake - hard to believe, but he was really over during the late 1990s, probably top 5 babyface. I think it should be a short run, I feel heels are better as the IC champion, him beating Mr. Perfect at SSL90 then dropping it to him around RR91 - or before - would have been fine. 3. Jimmy Snuka - there probably wasn't a more popular wrestler in the WWF in the early 1980s - pre-Hogan. He probably deserved the WWF title over Backlund, but he could have easily had 1 run with the title during this time. 4. The Narcissist - never really thought about this one until Ohtimate Wahriah mentioned it, but he would have made a great heel champion. Can't really think of a 5th, they really booked the IC title division well from the mid 80s to the mid 90s. So, I'll go with Taz. They never did much with him in the heavyweight division, he could have had a great, dominant run as the IC champion around this time. It would have really built him up strong, and as the heavyweight title division changed over the next few years, he could have fit in well.

Lawler would have been a great IC Champ as well in the early 90’s when he debuted

X-Pac Bossman Tatanka Martel Snuka Wow X-Pac never held the IC title???!??! He always pops into my head as the first guy I think of who should have been an IC Champ. Even stranger that he’s the only member of DX to not get a run with it.

Another name I’ll throw out there that I don’t see too often in these conversations is Matt Hardy. From ‘05-08 the guy was one of the more over midcarders in the company. With how long he was tenured in the WWE it’s weird to think he never got a quick run with the belt.
I’ve always felt his lackluster run with the European Title in 2001 (not really his fault IMO) soured the company on pushing him as a singles star, but his CW Champ run and later singles run from ‘05-08 proved to me atleast that the guy could have held the IC belt atleast once.

I think that promo where Vince brought him back to fight Edge was even worse for his career.
