This is a topic I always wanna bring up when I’m watching the network.
Why is it in the WWF, whenever Lawler hit a piledriver, the opponent would no sell it? Was there ever an explanation for that? I was watching a match with Hitman last night & even HE no sold it which raised my eyebrows lol.
As a kid, even I had heard that Lawlers piledriver broke Kauffman’s neck, so you’d think this move would have been protected as one of the dangerous finishers.
What was the deal with that?

Pretty much Vince saying'' You and your piledriver were over in Memphis but not here pal!''

Pretty much Vince saying'' You and your piledriver were over in Memphis but not here pal!'' Lol that’s what I think as well, like it was some backhand to Lawler. I’m surprised guys like Hart went along with it though. It’s like a spot, he does the piledriver & the opponent no sells it. I was watching a match with Hitman & I’m thinking, alright, Hart will sell it….nope! Why would that be a good spot though!? That’s his finish & like I said, it had a solid reputation even as a kid, I never watched Memphis wrestling or knew what it was, but even I knew he broke Andy Kaufman’s neck with the piledriver. That was pop culture

The fans in Memphis couldnt wait to see em piledrive the heel while the WWF fans couldnt wait to see the faces make the comeback and beat the sh** outta em.Sadly that meant the no sell of the move majority of the time. I dont agree with it but I get it.

My issue with wrestling has always been, I don’t see the need for the heel to suck in order for them to be a heel haha. Why can’t the babyface just be better? No selling moves like that is just like, ok so how would Lawler EVER win?

He did win with it over ham n eggers like Aldo Montoya and Scott Putski but yeah when he fought the bigger names the move didnt stand a chance IIRC he hit Owen Hart with it in a match in 93 but still had to use the trunks when he pinned em.Just defeats the whole purpose of it

I wonder why Lawler even agreed to come to the WWF in late 1992?? I always figured he would have stayed in Memphis with USWA because he pretty much owned it.
It did make for some interesting USWA Champions over the years though because of WWF guys working there.
Owen Hart, Papa Shango, Randy Savage, Tatanka, Razor Ramon, Ahmed Johnson, and there may have even been others.

I can see him coming over to WWF for just that, USWA exposure…not that it was good exposure haha, it exposure none the less. I like his first year, participating in the “Royal” Rumble and his feud with Bret that started at the “King” of the Ring were all great ideas. It was a cool idea to want to see him in those situations. But yea, considering he was such a big deal in Memphis, he was the equivalent of like Bobby Heenan or Jim Cornette in the ring, as far as legitimacy goes. Like, you knew when those guys were put into a match, they were gonna just get beat up on by the babyface. One of the issues for real though was that they copied The King concept so many times before he actually showed up (King Hacksaw, King Haku, Macho King, King Harley Race) and then even a King of the Ring…when they got the ACTUAL King, Vince probably just thought like, I’ve done this 100 times already.

No selling piledrivers should never beca thing. Even the most ridiculously booked match ever, Hogan's 1989 Survivor Series match, Powers of Pain were DQd after a Spike piledriver, Hogan who no sold everything sold the hell out of it.

Like, when a guy hit a piledriver when I was a kid, match over! Even if it wasn’t that guys finish, match over.
