Ok, so today I have a really tough one, your four favorite Bret Hart matches, can be from any time, his Hart Foundation days, WWF, WCW, hell even Stampede if you go back that far!
This is going to be tough, but here are mine.
Bret Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin: WrestleMania 13: No points of originality here, but I would wager this will be on most of our lists. This is one of those rare matches that just does not get old for me. I think it is just as good today (I actually appreciate it way more) as it was back in 1997. These two were gold together and the whole match is just so much fun. The double turn, Austin being covered in blood and Bret's master work at working the leg and lower back!
Bret Hart vs Mr. Perfect: SummerSlam 1991: By the time SummerSlam 1991 rolled around, I was all in on Bret Hart as a singles star. He felt like he was on TV every week and he was just so good! Here in the UK, Bret was a massive and I mean massive star and there was not one person that I knew during the early 90s who liked wrestling who did not love Bret Hart. Anyway, this match was awesome! these two worked really well together and I felt like you never knew which way it was going to go, the way Bret got Perfect into the sharpshooter was so cool and something as a kid I did not see coming at all! The only downside to this match is Coach and his annoying as hell whistle. To this day, I do not know why he was paired with Mr. Perfect!
Bret Hart vs Diesel: Survivor Series 1995: Bret and Diesel had amazing chemistry together and I would actually put Diesel up there as one of his best opponents! People talk about HBK and Diesel, but I always felt Bret did more for Diesel in the ring than Shawn did. Anyway, out of their four PPV matches, this one is my favorite. It showcased Bret picking apart and working a body part and we got to see Diesel be aggressive and a badass, something he had not been for the better part of a year since he won the title! The ending, with Bret catching him in a small package was awesome, as was Diesel putting Bret through the table which was shocking to see at the time.
Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels: European Rampage 1992 Glasgow House Show: Ok, so this one could not be any more nostalgia-based, but I really wanted a Hitman match I saw live and while I saw him wrestle Davey Boy at SummerSlam 1992 and Undertaker at One Night Only, this random house show from April 1992 gets my pick. This was a show that I won tickets too, I had my Bret Hart t-shirt on, my Bret Hart shades and I was so excited, this was for Bret's newly won IC title and this to this day is one of the best matches that I have seen live. The matches Bret and Shawn had over the IC title were so much better, there was no ego, they were just committed to having the best match they could and they clicked so well together. I remember getting a real kick out of the "Shawn Michaels has left the building" thing they did later in the show... that is right, this match was one of the earlier ones on the card!
I do have a few that nearly made the list most notably his match with Davey Boy at In Your House 5, Taker at One Night Only, Demolition and SummerSlam 90 and the Stieners on a VHS tape, but I am pretty happy with my four picks. I look forward to reading what you guys pick for your four favorite Hitman matches!

Bret/Perfect at Summerslam '91 is still one of the best matches I've ever seen so it gets top spot on my list.
Hard to leave off any of these three Wrestlemania matches, so I'll add Owen, Steve Austin and HBK.
Can I have all 3 King of The Ring '93 matches too? One of the greatest performances by any wrestler in one night.
One of my all time favourites is Bret/Hakushi from IYH, and it's hard to leave off Piper at WM 8.
This question has too many answers that I can't pick. Damn!

Hard to do, could think of at least 10 (EDIT: 17) that deserve a spot.
For me: Bret vs. Austin - WM13 (Still to me, the best match in Mania history) Bret vs. Perfect - SSL91 (First great match I ever saw) Bret vs. Piper - WM8 (an underrated gem from two of my favorites) Bret vs. Perfect - KOTR93 (equal to their SSL91 match, love the babyface vs babyface aspect)
Others that deserve notice just in case anyone needs help remembering: Bret vs. Bulldog - SSL92 (great match, great crowd) Bret vs. HBK - SSE92 (tremendous match) Bret vs. Owen - WM10 (excellent wrestling match) Bret vs. Owen - SSL94 (great cage match) Bret vs. 123Kid - Raw94 (probably the best match on Raw up to this point, or just behind HBK/Jannetty from 1993) Bret vs. Diesel - RR95 (great match, marred by all the interferences) Bret vs. Hakushi - IYH 1 (great match) Bret vs. Diesel - SSE95 (probably their best match, and all 4 PPV matches were solid) Bret vs. Bulldog - IYH 5? (as good, or even a bit better, than their SSL92 match) Bret vs. HBK - WM12 (I really enjoyed this match, even though most don't) Bret vs. Austin - SSE96 (fun match to ignite a great feud) Bret vs. Taker - SSL97 (their best match together, the finish was excellent) Bret vs. HBK - SSE97 (great match, even with the screwjob finish - which does add to the intrigue of the match)

Damn tough I tell you! I just went with singles matches, but this definitely deserves a mention. That was a great match. The Hart Foundation worked so well with so many great teams from probably the best Tag Team Era the WWF ever had (1985-1991). I also really liked their match with Demolition at Summer Slam 1988, and their match with the Brain Busters at Summer Slam 1989. I can't believe a decade ago or so, they gave the Mr. Summer Slam title to Edge over Bret. All of Bret's Summer Slam matches, with the exception of 1995, were very good to great, with 2 to 3 of them being the best ever. 1988: vs. Demolition 1989: vs. Brain Buster 1990: vs. Demolition 2 1991: vs. Mr. Perfect 1992: vs. British Bulldog 1993: vs. Doink & Jerry the King Lawler 1994: vs. Owen Hart 1995: vs. Isaac Yankem 1997: vs. Undertaker

If I went with another singles it definitely be Bret/Owen WM X And yeah miscarriage of justice with Edge over Bret for Mr. SSlam

I also wanted to include a Dynamite Kid vs Bret Hart match from around 1984/85. I don't think it was on a special card/event, I think it was on a house show that got released a number of years back. Really good match, great pacing.

If we are sticking with just Bret Hart on his own, it may be a bit easier than including his tag matches cause there were a few that were pretty great back in the day.
For Bret on his own though...
Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect from SummerSlam 91 Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog from SummerSlam 92 Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels from Survivor Series 92 Bret Hart's entire KOTR 93 night. I know that is 3 matches in one night, but wow, Bret proved that night why he was the best wrestler in that era.

Dynamite Kid - it was early on in the WWF careers. Bret was wearing the black & blue. Perfect - SummerSlam ‘91 Austin - WM13 Piper - WM8
I know many say it was boring, but I do think his Iron-man match CS HBK deserves consideration as well. It’s one of my top 5 Hitman matches. Although personally I wished Bret had won.

Great write-up. I agree with pretty much everything you said. The Austin/Bret match from WM13 was so good, to me, still the best match in Mania history (though, I have not seen them all, but I do watch any newer matches if people hype it up enough). The story was phenomenal, the in-ring chemistry of these two was probably the best of their careers, the double turn was done so well, and the blood on Austin just added more to the feud - made it feel more intense, more personal. For the Perfect/Bret match, I agree as well. Probably after Austin, I think this is the person that Bret had the best chemistry with (I think Bret himself has said that he felt he had the most chemistry with Curt than any other wrestler he worked with, that they were so in sync with each other). Pretty much every match they had with one another was tremendous, even their stuff in 1989 was great. I go back and forth between which match I think is better, this one or KOTR93, both are tremendous. This one was the first great match I remember ever seeing. This was the first PPV I remember renting from Blockbuster, and I was all about this match, became a huge Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect fan afterwards - never mattered if they were heels or faces, I always rooted for them. And you're right about Bret being over at this time, you could really see him becoming a star at this time. This was also the time period that he became the best in-ring performer in the company (taking the role from Mr. Perfect - in my opinion). From 1991 through 1994, he pretty much had the best match on the card every night (with the exception of WM10, though his match with Owen was very close to HBK/Razor). HBK kind of took over the roll as the guy who was the best in-ring worker in 1995, though I feel he in Bret were neck and neck - Bret still had many nights from 1995 to 1997 where he had the best match on the card. For Diesel/Bret, I agree, I believe this was their best match together, but all 4 of their PPV matches were really good. Bret had a way of working with larger opponents and making it believable that he could win. He really did a great job here, keeping Diesel looking strong but still coming out the winner and champion. I really love the finish of this match. For your Shawn/Bret pick, I wish I could have seen that match, it sounds like it tore the house down. I like your assessment of their mindsets at the time, they weren't about ego - who was better, who should be the one to win - it was just about having great matches. I always liked their matches, I can't remember them ever having a dud. Even during their tag team days, I remember these two wrestled one another - I believe in 1990, on one of the Coliseum Home Video VHS's - and it was a great match. I often wonder if Vince watched that match and decided that these two would do battle over the IC title in the coming years...
