Does anyone else feel like Borne’s version of Doink doesn’t get the credit it’s due?
Doink is largely seen as wrestlecrap, compared with stuff like the Gobbledy Gooker or the Goon.
Largely I’d attribute that to face Doink, but because of that, Borne has kind of lost his legacy. Borne was absolutely incredible. His character work, his ring style, his work rate, his promo. He performed it all flawlessly. I truly think he could be the most under appreciated talent in history.

Hands down Bourne was the best Doink. He nailed the evil clown character to a tee. When he left the WWF, that was it for the character as far as I'm concerned.
Even that short stint in ECW as ''Bourne again'' was great.I also gotta shout his Mid South days with Duggan and DiBiase as the Rat Pack.
Solid talent no doubt about it

I was shocked when I learned Doink was really Big Josh. He must be a really good actor.

Evil Doink worked so well because of Borne. He didn't come off as a cheesy cartoon, he came off like the villain in a horror movie. It's too bad his Borne Again character didn't have a longer run. I loved how the character was Borne on the brink of being fully insane, torn between Doink and Shane Douglas trying to pull the real him out. I didn't really like when he reinvented it years later on the indies, with his look taking from Heath Ledger's Joker.

Bourne was a great worker....I never enjoyed Doink on any level though. He was always a instant channel switch for me...Man the Steiners used to beat f*ckin f*ck outta him in my hasbro fed....Doink & Repo had a brief run as a team together...LOL

Question for you. In your Hasbro figure fed, did you stop using Smash when you had Repo Man?? Or did you make it so Smash and Repo Man were two entirely different people in your fed??

For me they were different folks...Ax & Smash were a force in my tag ranks until I stopped playing with my Hasbros...I remember vividly having them feud with Money Inc, Steiners, Nasty, Disasters & Smokin Gunns

Wow, you had a stellar tag division!
Did you have practically all the Hasbro figures?? I know in Canada, it seemed the last line I remember seeing was the one that had Virgil in it.

And to answer the question more honestly, I do not think that Borne is the most underrated performer ever.
He seems to be rated pretty well these days as when Doink is discussed many regard him as not just being the best incarnation, but also the only redeemable aspect of the entire gimmick. People not from that era who may have written Doink off as always being a joke wrestling gimmick have come around to appreciate his work under the paint and now realize there was a real depth to Borne's version. It took a while, but finally getting the respect he deserves in recent years. Halloween 3 in clown wrestler form pretty much.

Matt was great as Doink. The evil Doink should have lasted longer but I do think that Ray deserves a lot more credit from fans. When Matt died, Ray was already scheduled for an autograph signing and people were starting crap about him portraying Doink. Even when he does it now, there's always someone wanting to cause trouble saying Ray is a fake Doink. Matt was a drug addict who lost his job. It sucks but WWF went with someone else. The Doink character was an awesome creation. It sucks Ray wasn't able to work "evil" but he did what the company asked for 2+ years. He IS Doink and he deserves even more credit than Matt as he put in more time WWF.
Matt does deserve more than most of WWF's crap gimmicks from 1992-1996 but unlike most of the guys who performed the gimmicks he had a horrible disease that eventually took his life while many of the other gimmick guys did not and they live now and get to do the virtual signings and such.
