So no attitude era, no Undertaker or Kane, no Rated R Superstar and countless other gimmicks that have entertained masses for generations? lol Exactly! I grew up on NWA, AWA, WCCW, then got into Japan, ECW, then TNA, and now AEW. You guys can have your Dude Love, Boogieman, Fiend, Giant Gozales, and sex with dead people in caskets. I'll stick to pro wrestling.
You know, for as much as we argue about what is and isn't "sports entertainment" I think you can pinpoint wht type of fan you are on what you first watched as a kid. Your first intro to wrestling was nWo and DX? Well no wonder you like WWE. Was your first intro the Von Erichs, Dusty Rhodes, Misawa, and RVD? Well no wonder you prefer AEW.
Blue Meanie, Danhausen, Abdullah the Butcher passing along his contaminated blood, Marko Stunt, Pockets, Kamala slapping his stomach non stop, unnecessary dangerous spots and garbage death matches…. Gotta love that real pro wrestling!

I conveniently left out anyone worth a damn from every promotion you listed since you did the same. WWE is by far the most successful wrestling company in the history of ever. So I guess they made a pretty good decision.

But yeah, every company has characters, etc. Look at what Matt Hardy tried when he arrived in AEW. It was hot garbage, but it got greenlit. For me personally the line has always been at supernatural/arcade game cheat code stuff. I.e. Undertaker sitting up magically/power of the urn, Hulk/Warrior both magically becoming impervious to pain, etc. Whereas things like Danhausen's "curses" which are a running gag, Bushwackers just being weird backwoods maniacs, etc were amusing. Everyone's gonna have their own preferences.

And sure, I'll give you AJ, Finn, Riddle, Benoit, Eddie, Sami, Kev, Rey (all of whom came from somewhere else); as well as Owen, Seth, Bret, and Shawn. But for every Steamboat vs Macho classic ... you get ten times the amount of scooter races, hot dog eating contests, sex under the blankets in the ring, bra and panty matches, crucifictions, and beer trucks lol. They'll give you CLASSICS yep ... on PPV. Meanwhile you can watch classics ... weekly ... elsewhere. To each their own.

Dusty Rhodes. Jim Crockett. Vergne Gagne. Literally anyone in the wrestling business and any sensical fans that want their favorite sport or promotion or team to succeed. Just about everyone came from somewhere else. If you are so big on AEW, interesting take to have on where people came from seeing as 3 of the 5 AEW champions came from WWE. And only one of those were a star before WWE. WWE does do some really stupid stuff. I’ll never run around defending stupid segments or stupid matches or stupid characters or whatever for WWE. Or AEW. Or any promotion. Because they’ve all done their fair share of booking. We must be watching different shows because I’m not seeing classics weekly. From anywhere. The last classic I’m aware of on tv was the Danielson - Page time limit draw match But most importantly of all, you’re correct. To each their own. I just don’t see why so many people get off on bashing WWE and say it’s not wrestling. It’s wrestling. Always has been. It may not be your style. May not be a lot of people’s style. But it is wrestling. That is factual. What else is factual is it is still the most popular and most viewed wrestling promotion and I believe that’s what bothers a lot of people.

I can understand all of this. It makes sense the way you explained it but then if you didn't watch or list WWE at all as something you grew up watching then why are you posting in this WWE thread? Obvious answer is that you can do whatever you want of course lol don't mean it that way but I just mean that I didn't see you list WWE/WWWF or whatever it may have been when you were watching. So I guess my question is what era did you watch/enjoy of the WWE/F if any at all? p.s. I think the first WWF show I seen was one where Undertaker and all his minions from the Ministry put Stone Cold on the Undertaker cross and that's how the RAW ended with the little WWF logo and copyright thing in the corner so yeah that's probably why I love the attitude era. I can't stand most of the Hogan era. Charisma was off the charts but I have no interest in seeing wrist lock into head lock into arm drag etc. Or seeing a normal suplex be used as a finisher. It bores me but that's bc I'm used to so much more now. I don't need to see a million flips though either. I like action and story. I want to see somebody stomping a mudhole not rolling on the mat like a BJJ tournament.

So I guess my question is what era did you watch/enjoy of the WWE/F if any at all? Great question. I'm 47. When I was a kid I lived in Atlanta. So NWA (Jim Crockett) was always on TV. Even at that age I saw a difference in that style of wrestling programming, and what WWF was doing. One was darker (I'm actually talking lighting lol) and for the most part just had "men" wrestling. The other was super bright, and had these wild, larger than life characters. I knew wrestling was fake, but still felt as if NWA was a bit more "real". For example, I hated when Hogan would HULK UP lol.
Have I ever liked WWE? Sure. They've had some amazing wrestlers and amazing matches along the way. During the Ratings Wars I'd watch both ... but my heart was always with NWA/WCW. Then when WCW went to hell and the nWo came along ... I had to find something else, as both were just too focused on "entertainment" and reaching an audience that cared more for humor, story, and crude behavior than wrestling. That's why I love AEW. Sure they do stuff silly from time to time ... but they focus on the wrestling first.

I think the real problem is the overall lack of actual wrestling on weekly wwe tv compared to any other company - the focus isn’t on the wrestling.
aew has lots of sports entertainment style wrestling too, so I’m not throwing rocks here.

That's what does it for me. Last smackdown total in ring wrestling was less than Orange Cassidy vs. Tony Nese. Above all I watch for what happens in the ring, and like twenty or thirty minutes of a two hour show is not nearly enough to me.

This story certainly doesn't have full on '94 vibes yet, but it's also gained a lot more traction than I would have thought, so it will be interesting to see if more and more stories start to snowball from this.

I've been TRYING to watch wwe again and it's been rough. they follow the same formula every week pretty much and the "matches" are like thr side story to the actual angle. then it's like the recycle the same matches over and over again. how many times are the street profits going to wrestle the usos? lol

Yeah, you’re right. Those are ALL examples of pure pro wrestling. ECW, TNA, and AEW definitely never had questionable gimmicks, characters, and/or storylines. It must be nice to be such an elitist fan!

This is 100% understandable. Of the many things I dislike about current day wrestling, one of the biggest is the bright and fancy lighting. Wrestling should have grit and darkness to it, it should be more rock concert vibe or Lucha Underground lighting. I also can't stand (as others have said) the lack of actual wrestling on the TV. How many hours of weekly WWE content are there? Upwards of 10 I imagine and they use a fraction of it to shock and awe in the ring. Ive hardly ever been a fan of the comedy work unless its done in a way that doesnt bury someone or make them look ridiculous. For instance, Stone Cold/Kurt Angle stuff or Angle/Edge, Jericho/Rock etc have always done good work with each other on the mic and in the ring. I do enjoy a good promo as much as a good match. As for things I loved about the old days, the big gold belt is the greatest wrestling belt ever made in my opinion with the closest second being the (still prestigious) NWA title. Love the look and feel of them both. Those are what Championship titles should look like. Like a damn prize, not something that came out a claw machine. So I definitely hear you on many of these points.

Bumping an old thread but a big revelation with this story: Its found that WWE and Vince embezzled company money to make these payments from 2006 to 2022. Over $14 million of company funds were misrepresented on financial reports to investors.
So I guess this is what the investigation found, and I am assuming at this point that Vince's retirement wasn't 100% at-will. THIS is a big development and I am sure that it pushed him out.
