Attitude-Austin (You could argue The Rock too, but Austin was the bigger star even when out)

PG and ruthless aggression are two different eras
John cena has ruthless
Roman has the PG era

Golden-Bruno Hulkamania-Hogan New Generation-Bret Attitude-Austin (You could argue The Rock too, but Austin was the bigger star even when out) Ruthless Aggression/PG Era-Cena Current-Roman Pretty much this. Possibly swapping out Bret for Shawn. Crazy how Austin really only ever did about 2 years of active duty as the top good guy in WWE, compared to how long Bruno, Backlund, Hogan, Cena and Reigns did. And yet he’s arguably the greatest. |

And yet he’s arguably the greatest. I debated on it but Bret was pretty much the face from 93-97 when he left. When they tried to build Diesel as the guy, it didn’t work as well and they gave the belt back to Bret. With Shawn, he was the face while Bret was away but the plan was for him to drop it back to Bret, and focus seemed to be more on Bret when he returned at Survivor Series. It’s pretty wild how into Bret Vince was to just let him leave for WCW. I think Hogan is the only one that was over more than Austin was, and I think that’s a huge part based on longevity. If Austin hadn’t had injuries cut his career short and didn’t do the heel run, I think he could have been bigger. Plus in terms of popularity Hogan only had to deal with Warrior coming close for a short amount of time. Austin had to deal with the Rock who almost as over as Austin for years. |

I think it feels that way because in Vince’s eyes Bret was never really “thee” guy. Like he didn’t do the box office the other guys did, that Hogan before him did. So Vince kept trying other guys, keeping Bret in a main event slot, but when those guys failed he always went back to Bret because he would do a certain level of business. Then he gave Bret that “the guy” contract, but Vince just never saw him as that guy so when push came to shove and money was tight, he basically took the money back or tried to renegotiate to add more money to the back end. |
