I believe the issue isn't with lioness rights per se. Like Sting can appear as Sting anywhere and everywhere he wants as Sting in the Sting makeup and etc. But if Jazwares were to release a figure of Sting in a look he only wore in WWE (or in footage owned by WWE) WWE could claim that Jazwares is trying to cash in on their intellectual property. Whether WWE could win that case, I don't know. But it seems like something JW has decided to avoid even the possibility of. It's not even a matter of if the case is winnable. It's a matter of if Jazwares/AEW wanna risk an expensive drawn out court battle over a toy they'd make little money if not lose money on even if they won. If they thought the case was winnable and they'd make hand over fist money from it they'd have done it already. Out of interest how were PWT able to release Surfer Sting Micro Brawlers?

Damn, just got an email from the Mattel creations about the revealed event with more info.
Looks like it isn't any reveal of figures and just a q&a reveal that will have a lot of unanswered questions. And completely hand picked questions.

I'm still trying to figure out how they made Abyss and Robert Roode ones tbh let alone Sting looks. I assume they are just so small scale (as in size of the business and production numbers) that it's not worth going after for WWE. So they feel like they can get away with a lot more.

There's always loopholes. Jazzwares can totally do a black and pink singlet Owen Hart without logos for example. The singlet itself isn't copywrited, the logos are. Martha would prolly be the one to block it though. Of course there is. I feel alot of it is Jazwares holding out. Give me a NJPW red white and blue Sting supreme Ringside! That would be awesome. Probably the only AEW figure I would buy.

Doesn’t Steve Borden own the likeness/rights of Sting? I believe the issue isn't with lioness rights per se. Like Sting can appear as Sting anywhere and everywhere he wants as Sting in the Sting makeup and etc. But if Jazwares were to release a figure of Sting in a look he only wore in WWE (or in footage owned by WWE) WWE could claim that Jazwares is trying to cash in on their intellectual property. Whether WWE could win that case, I don't know. But it seems like something JW has decided to avoid even the possibility of. Which kind of sucks because WWE owns pretty much all other wrestling companies video libraries, especially ones that Sting worked for: WCW, JCP, Mid-South, and UWF. So basically, all of his surfer Sting looks. I believe both of the TNA releases were looks he wore for NJPW shows, that could be why they were able to do it. Also, I thought I heard something that when Sting signed his contract with the WWE years ago, he signed over his likeness rights. Is that why AEW can only make figures and t-shirts for stuff he wears on AEW? Weren't they supposed to put out a Blade Runners Sting figure a while ago but couldn't because that was on video from Mid-South, now owned by WWE?

RE: The TNA ones, as per Major Pod last year, TNA contracts of the time had a clause that the company retained the rights to produce merchandise of and pay royalties to wrestlers as they appeared in TNA even after their departure from the company. I don't particularly understand how that's legal, but given Myers heavy involvement with TNA merchandising and etc., I trust him as a reliable source of information on this kind of stuff. Re: Surfer Sting stuff, I think it's a three-fold thing: 1. Small stuff like brawlers would fall under the radar of something WWE would go after. 2. As discussed, Sting wore Surfer Sting attire in plenty of places that aren't under the WWE library umbrella. 3. For WWE to even try going after a release, they would need to argue that it was based on a look that was only worn in video library image that they own. Since Micro Brawlers are hyper-stylized and usually dumbed down a lot and etc. that would probably end up being more trouble than it's worth.

That's insane, but at the same time I am begging them to make use of that for their Ultra figures.

Really hope the Mattel creations is something punk related Same, at least part go it. I still think a made-to-order Ultimate version of the MITB 2011 gear would be the perfect place to start with new Punk Mattels.

However I am a man of evil and chaos, so I personally hope his first figure is Meng with WCW hardcore title.

Make him with 4 different expressions (before, during, yelling, and after with the hair messy), give him multiple hands (closed, gripping, gts/kiss blowing, and the I love you Bret hands), a nice quality ringer Punk shirt, a microphone, and WWE title and I will buy multiples. All of that seems like it would be worth the made-to-order price points.

I mean just in recent memory they have inducted Jeff Jarrett, Ivory, Hillbilly Jim, Rock n Roll Express, Stan Hansen, Jacqueline, Jushin Thunder Liger etc. and we never got figures of any of them. Not to mention the countless legacy inductees recently like Dick the Bruiser, Dr. Death Steve Williams, Bruiser Brody, Wahoo McDaniel, luna Vachon, Buddy Rose, Lord Alfred Hayes, Stan Stasiak and more that also didn't get figures I mean obviously it can't HURT our chances lol. But it doesn't seem like Hall of Fame directly translates over to figures. I don't think they all sign the same kind of deals.

With it being reported his son is possibly signing with wwe and now there’s rumors of him being inducted, I would be surprised if he doesn’t sign a legends deal and even more surprised if he’s not offered one.

Looks like Mean Gene baf figure was his last figure from Mattel.
His face (among others) are blurred out in wwe2k24, which means WWE no longer has a deal in place.
