This is something that fascinates me lately. The most important era for talent movement ever.
WCW gets Hall, Nash, Waltman & Dibiase. WCW gets 3 years out of Hall & Nash really....not even 2 out of Waltman & Dibiase? well that's its own thing.
WWF gets Austin, Foley, Mero, Pillman, Farooq & Vader.
Vince doesn't really want Austin & Foley has to be convinced & is lukewarm on both. Not that hot on Simmons either. Prichard & JR worked hard for these 3 guys. Foley gets the rub of UT and is off to the races straight away despite Vince and the other 2 guys are saddled with awful gimmicks.
Then on the flip side? He's got big plans for Vader....and tells the beyond the Mat folks Mero, Pillman & Ahmed Johnson are amongst the guys that are the future of the company..all 3 are given the big P. By October of 96 this is pretty much all f*cked and the 3 guys he didnt want would be majorly over in their roles by 1997.
isnt it strange the way things work out.

I wish Mero had worked out in WWF. I really enjoyed his matches in WCW

Crazy to think I was so sure Marc Mero was going to be a massive star.

Crazy to think I was so sure Marc Mero was going to be a massive star. So did I....I recognised him straight away & then his whole intro feuding with HHH etc? I thought he had big things in store.

I always liked Marc Mero. Mid-card characters and storylines are so underrated imo.

I was watching a match the other day Rock vs Farooq. My wife asked me who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. I had to try to explain at this point in time wrestling was becoming more reality based. She did not understand.

I was also on the Mero train. After he lost the IC title he lost a ton of steam and then the injury really did him in. I never cared for the boxer gimmick and he was overshadowed by Sable at that point anyway.

It was all over for Marc when Pettingill introduced him as Marc Maro at WM12

It was all over for Marc when Pettingill introduced him as Marc Maro at WM12 It was probably a slip of the tongue with Marc's first name but something like that should have gotten Todd a stern talking to. You have a guy coming in with a huge contract and a pretty good push and Todd messes up his name on major PPV. I also think about Foley being bitter he was hired for less than Mero but Mero was coming off probably 2 years of being hot in WCW while Foley was the loser in the loser leaves town match in late 94 and not sure so many WWF fans followed ECW or whatever he was doing anywhere else so I get why Vince wanted Mero for a higher price.

Ron should have had a run with the WWF title. Even if briefly.

Ron should have had a run with the WWF title. Even if briefly. When he was the leader of the Nation they missed the boat & didn't do enough with him. Ron was over huge in that role.

I totally get why Vince seen more in Mero. Count me amongst the folks that think Foleys run in WCW was "eh" at best aside from a few high points dotted about.

i'm not sure if it was injuries, but simmons seemed to have really slowed down by 97 in comparison to his wcw years.

I too thought Mero was going to be huge in WWF. If only he didn't take that Sable bomb.
And Farooq should have won the title from Taker at King of the Ring. Taker never needed a title.

I remember reading a magazine in about 92 or 93 that Steve Austin was going to be huge in wrestling.kept an eye on him since and had high hopes but in 96 couldn’t have dreamed he would have hit the heights he did.
The moves were vital for the regeneration of wrestling. Nash/Hall & Austin/Foley wouldn’t have achieved half as much if they had stayed put.

Marc Mero was great as the Wild Man character he had for the first half of 1996. Problem was, he was booked to lose a lot of big matches. KOTR he lost to Austin, In Your House he lost to Austin, SummerSlam he lost to Goldust.
I never thought he was going to be WWE Champion, but I really thought the IC Title would circle around Mero's waist as the new "Razor Ramon" type mid card wrestler who always was fighting for that title or holding that title.
When Marc Mero blew out his knee in 1997 and came back at the end of 1997 as the boxer gimmick, that was pure crap to me. He just didn't connect to me or I think to a lot of the wrestling fans.

The problem with Mero was Sable always going to end up the star of the two.

The problem with Mero was Sable always going to end up the star of the two. You've hit the nail on the head there. A similar thing was beginning to happen with him and Kimberley in WCW - his only saving grace there was him being Johnny B. Badd. That was a great gimmick and he pulled it off really well. Wildman and Marvellous just didn't work after that.
