My buddy The Dave and I have had this discussion before. Why was Rick Rude in DX?? What part of any history says that Rick Rude would align with HBK or Triple H in any which way??
We both figured that Kevin Nash was more suited for that role but with him being in WCW at the time, it was not gonna happen. But Rick Rude??
Did anyone else find that odd that Rick Rude was with DX??

Looking back it was an odd pairing but man if he didnt nail this role for the brief time it lasted. The ''insurance policy'' gimmick was perfect.
He left at the right time though as he def wouldnt fit in with babyface DX in 98

He was working with ECW at the time and looking to get back into wrestling. ECW and WWF worked closely together, so I think WWF did him a favor by bringing him back. I believe he wanted to wrestle, but WWF didn't want to pay the money to get him out of his Lloyd's of London insurance policy contract to do it, so this was their alternative. He came in as a bodyguard type person ("the Insurance Policy") and he allowed anyone to purchase his services. Michaels and DX took him up on the offer, I believe the reason was they were so annoying that everyone wanted to take shots at them, so they needed extra security. I don't think it was fully thought out, I don't remember Rude doing much/getting involved in matches. I believe because of his Lloyd's of London Insurance Policy, he wasn't allowed to get physical with anyone or it would void the contract, so him being a bodyguard didn't fit well. The best he could do was distract the ref so Michaels and Helmsley could cheat, or so Chyna could get involved.

Yea he was a great fit for that heel DX, and the fact that they pushed it as Rude just aligning himself with the baddest of bad guys and the highest bidder. He doesn’t get enough credit for how great that first DX run was.

I probably viewed it through rose tinted spec but was just happy to see him back in the WWF.
In hindsight wasn’t a great fit. With Michaels involved, DX certainly didn’t need a mouth piece and as he couldn’t get physically involved, didn’t really work as an interference runner (imo anyway). And the Chyna factor as the bodyguard type was more intriguing than Rude.
I’d have much rather have seen him with his own interview segment along the lines of Pipers pit et al,

It wasn't really DX, well not the proper DX.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the DX merch and entrance music didn't debut until after he left.

I’m a big Rick Rude fan, but his time in DX was forgettable to me.

His 1980s, early 90s gimmick was something that would have translated to the Attitude Era. He was probably a few years past when he would have made a bigger difference. By 1997 he seemed like a relic, maybe not as old as Piper in WCW but similar, maybe like Warrior in WCW.

I’d argue D-X went downhill after Rude left. Just like the NWO, it was best when it was the original formation and then doesn’t hold up to me much after that. This coming from a big Billy Gunn fan.

I found the HHH & HBK DX a bit cringy. Even their 06/09 runs sucked. The real DX IMO was the DX Army. It was the group at their peak and how most remember them.

I liked them as cocky jabronis that you’d want to see get their asses kicked and yet the usually found a way to win.

To say that DX went downhill after Rude left is a strong, 100% subjective POV.
99% of DX's (pre 2006) memorable moments were AFTER Rude left.
They really upped the ante after he left.
By far, objectively the group did their best post-Rude.

His 1980s, early 90s gimmick was something that would have translated to the Attitude Era. So Val Venus? He was the 80s version of Val but without the porn vibes. Val was an indy version of Rick. He had the long curly hair, facial hair, did the hip swivel with hands behind his head and had the same style music.
