It's one thing to meet a wrestler at a signing, but has anyone ever just stumbled onto a wrestler in the wild?
WrestleMania 28. Me and a few of my buddies from NJ/NY flew down to Florida for WrestleMania. We had a such a great weekend going to Axxess, Hall of Fame and then finally the big show. Our only regret was not attending Raw because that was the night Brock Lesnar made his return of course.
We flew out of Miami on Monday afternoon and had a quick layover in Atlanta before catching our connecting flight to LaGuardia pretty tired and mildly hungover. As we walked by first class, there was Ron Simmons. He had just been inducted into the HOF and was with his wife. I stopped and not wanting to be disrespectful quickly said congrats on his HOF induction. He was super nice and said thanks. As a fearful flyer, that was easily the best plane ride of my life because I knew that nothing was going to f*ck with that airplane with Ron Simmons on board.
My other story comes several years earlier. I was 19 years old and took a bus from NJ to Detroit to attention my very first WrestleMania all by myself in 2007. One of those life experiences I'm just starting to appreciate these days. I arrived the day of the event and didn't have a hotel. Every place was occupied as expected. One of my last stops was a beautiful Marriott and even though all of their normal rooms were totally sold out, the amazing person at the desk gave me one of their suites at a discounted rate. This room had a hot tub and everything.
Ford Field was only a few blocks from this hotel so I walked there. On the way back, I got lost and had no idea where I was going. Saw a hotel so I decided to walk in and ask them for directions to where I was staying. This hotel had one of those revolving entranceways. Being pretty exhausted I attempted to exit the entryway, but smacked my faced directly into the door that I didn't even know was there. As soon as I walk out there were two people laughing asking if I was alright and they were Bobby Heenan and Gene Okerlund.
Pretty embarrassing for me, but they were awesome and knowing that I provided some comic relief to a few legends makes it even better. Just knowing that Bobby Heenan might have called me a "ham and egger" when I stumbled out of that revolving door makes me so proud.
