I am curious to see what other collectors are looking for out of Mattel Creations Crowdfunding. We know peg space is limited in stores like Walmart and Target and so therefore the 6” figure will always dominate retail. But without stores like ToysRUs, Mattel Creations is our best opportunity to get those big ticket items or collectibles that we otherwise wouldn’t get. But my question to the community is what would you like to see being offered via crowdfunding? There are currently three strategies taking place on Mattel Creations; 1.) Crowdfunding for larger playsets 2.) Selling collector style figures that are in stock until they sell out – i.e. Coliseum Collection and 3.) Pre-sell collector style figures that are produced only in the quantities sold by the cut-off date – i.e. Ultimate Cody Rhodes and Logan Paul. I feel part of the struggle with the last 2 crowdfunding campaigns is not so much the money, because if all tiers are unlocked, the value is there; but instead the space needed. Both products take up a large amount of real estate that I would imagine even the most diehard collector has limited room for. I backed the New Gen Arena and have the light-up entrance unit and the figures on display, but the ring is still in the box. And I also backed the WCW campaign and will only display the figures keeping the stage in the box. Now we know per Steve’s previous comments that they would never really need to do a crowdfunding for 6” figures because if they want to make them, they will, and they will find a way to sell them. And I say that to say the figures we get with these crowdfunding efforts are to add additional value to the customer they aren’t truly the part being funded. Now I’m sure everyone would rather just have Mattel sell or pre-sell everything, but we know that won’t be the case for non 6” figures. So in my eyes I feel that if Mattel Creations focused on items that were more apt to be displayed on a shelf vs. an item that takes up the size of a coffee table, then there could be more traction and support. Items like the high end Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth dolls, larger stylized caricature figures (prototypes by Jakks, but again just an idea) or whatever else comes to your imagination. I don’t believe all crowdfunding campaigns need unlockable tiers, as the premise of the strategy is to get enough backers to initiate production. If they do something cool with add-ons at different levels of achievement, cool, but not necessary. So wrestling community, what are your thoughts?

What are these? Were these ever made, or attempted?

The Jakks Vinyl Aggression line. I don't think they ever came out, but they were definitely cool looking. Kinda wish Matty would try it, seeing this picture again.

I funded the new gen set but I didn’t really want it other than macho man and it was fun to be a part of. The nitro stage is the thing I want most in my wildest collector dream and it’s stressful not knowing if enough people want it too.
My favorites though are the ones with the awesome exclusive packaging like slim Jim macho, NHB, sdcc mr t, Retrofest, sdcc undertaker, and to some lesser extent ones like Tru and rse exclusives

I think things like the crowdfund model can be a good idea. I think the tiers thing is silly and only serves to actually put people off ("it's not worth buying if X or Y aren't included"). I find the tiers to be a flawed model insofar as.. i can only buy it once. Once I have committed to buying the WCW stage (to use it as an example) I can't help that other people won't back it. I feel like there should be a middle ground of sorts. Give it 6-8 weeks being up for backing, and in that time if it reaches 8,000 funders, the whole thing is unlocked, or none is unlocked. Then if it doesn't get backed, perhaps reach out to the people who did commit to it and ask them if they'd be interested in a stripped back set (either slightly cheaper with just the stage, or more expensive with all the figures) and go from there, perhaps. I think things like vinyl aggression, micro aggression, LJN styled figures, 12 inch figures, etc. all have a market, but they're small markets and novelty items. I'd love, love, love to see Mattel's take on Unmatched Fury, but I probably wouldn't buy any of them (except a 2002 Kane if they did one). It's niche stuff.
EDIT: One thing that I think should be learned though, especially from the WCW Stage (whether it gets funded or not) is that it doesn't need to be a secret. Not every little detail of production needs to be divulged, but at least get people on board with what the product will be. Had Mattel approached people and asked "what would you like to see" I think many people would have made it clear a Nitro stage would be a great idea, but just not the priority.

I don't know... things like the Nitro stage and last years New Gen entrance set just don't really interest/excite me - I'd rather have more exclusive figures or figure sets/factions in unique packaging.

I personally just want figures. I display, not play. I have no use or room for a ring, stage, or playset.

I love playsets, stages, backstage stuff, all of it. But my collection is more modern-focused, and I doubt they're ever going to aim one of these big campaigns in that direction, unless they do something generic -- like a big arena backstage playset with locker rooms, concessions, a loading dock, production area, boiler room, etc.

Those are aaaaaammmmazing!!!! They remind me of the Kevin Smith movie universe inaction figures. I think Mattel should do these once the Superstars line has run its course

I honestly don't care for exclusive figures. We get those from other retailers. What I do care for is stuff that we won't ever get released at retail. That's what these crowdfunds are for. We're talking stages, playsets like HITC, Elimination Chamber etc. If this Nitro stage doesn't succeed, it'll probably be the end of me even bothering with these things. I also don't see people backing up those larger playsets either because they'll more than likely be in that price range. Not much else interests me. The Nitro stage I've wanted since I was a young boy. I wasn't able to get the Nitro setup in the late 90's so now I have the opportunity to. I'm hoping this thing gets funded. I'm already losing interest in collecting figures in general and this playset brought back the joy of being a 5-6 year old.

I have to wonder what the future of these crowd fund projects will be in general. Looking at the other side of the aisle Hasbro has had quite a few swings and misses of late.

I want exactly the type of eye-catching display pieces that they've offered us so far. They give us a billion figures and anybody they have signed they'll find a way to put out in a set, we don't need Kickstarter for that. The whole point of the kickstarter is for premium, high-priced options like display pieces imo.

I would be more interested in playsets/ dioramas for our figures that would just add more the display. Takes me back to when Jakks actually came out with their real scale ring, HITC, MITB, and elimination chamber playsets it was honestly amazing and that's what I want from a crowd funder. A stand alone piece that isn't figure related I have no interest for.

Preferably stuff that fits with Ultimates but maybe not a huge $400 item. They should try something smaller like Eddie Guerrero with a low rider or Undertaker with a hearse and Coffin
If they’re gonna do a big item it should be a hell in a cell for the ultimate ring with Hell in a Cell PPV and Armageddon and King of the Ring ring skirts and they could add announce tables and a figure or two like Rikishi and Undertaker or Kurt Angle

Seems like ddp or Steiner in the future unless they announce them after the funder fails ?

What we as a community have to understand is that Ultimates or any other type of 6" figure won't be crowdfunded on their own. They will either sell them outright or be part of a larger playset. So after entrance units, New Gen, WCW, RAW and Smackdown Fist, what other large playsets could there be that warrent a high price tag that can support teirs of add-ons?

I don’t want Ultimates crowdfunded. I’m saying I only care about the Ultimates that come with crowdfunds. I have no need or use for rings, stages, vehicles, or any other big play set. I only care about what Ultimates come with them.
