I just picked up a few random Ultimate Warrior Basics, and want to dabble in moving some random things like knee pads, and heads etc to some loose extra elites/ultimates I have around to make some basic customs. I assume this is going to involve some boiling water, but I just wanted to make sure I have the procedure down first while i wait for the figs to arrive.
I assume the legs will have to come apart to get things like the knee pads off? boiling water should take care of the head as well right? how long does a fig usually need in the water?

I usually microwave water for 2 1/2 minutes in a microwave-safe bowl. Hold my figure so its entire head is submerged for about 40 seconds. Take it out, wipe it down, and see how rubbery it is. If its super soft feeling and has a lot of give, you can pull it right off. If it still seems pretty hard and not so gummy, put it back in for another 30 seconds or so.
Same deal with boots. Just hold the figure in the water so joint where the boot meets the shin is completely submerged. When they're feeling gummy, pull them off and slide the knee pads down off of the shin.

Ultimates/Elites are the same way, when it comes to things like the boots? Obviously the Ultimate heads are designed to pop off, but I assume I need hot water for the boots?

Yeah, wherever the "shin swivel" joint is, the joint where the boot meets the lower leg, is what needs to be heated to be taken off. That goes for all Mattel figures.

Boots will pop really easily once you've got them nice and soft. Maybe 30-45 seconds in some good, hot water. Just be sure to grip the figure beneath the knee if you can. I haven't had a disaster yet, but the resonant heat from the water can loosen up that knee joint too.

And use a dish towel to hold the figure so you donβt burn yourself.

Do they go back together "cold" for lack of a better term, or should I warm them back up to put the figures back together?

I recently did a boot swap, taking the boots from E98 Big E and putting them on his E95 figure. I didn't move the boots from E95 to E98, and when I tried to at my desk yesterday, it was too tight a fit for me to comfortably force it, so I may heat them back up to store them on the figure I'm not using. When I did the Legends Lex Luger boot swap, I moved them right away and all four went in with no issue. If you do it on the spot after removing them, you should be fine, but if they have time to cool, you may need to dip them back in for a bit.

I heat up a cup of water in the microwave for about 5 minutes and that works for me for everything from simple part swaps to torso cracks.
