So I’m listen to an audiobook just now based around the WWF in 1995. Like most wrestling related books, I take all information with a pinch of salt.
This book mentioned that Jim Ross had lobbied for Steve Williams to come in to the company and debut at KOTR 95. The booking plan was for him to win the tournament and then go after Diesel and his belt.
Was there any truth in this?
Do you guys think Steve Williams would have been a good fit in this time frame?
If it did transpire I don’t think it would have been the worst thing to happen in WWF history (and surely would have been a major improvement on King Mabel). However I’m unconvinced that he would have fit the New Generation. As great as he is (and he is great), his personality and style wouldn’t have blended with the 95 ethos.
Any thoughts?

Honestly have idea what he was like in 95, but three years later is a cooked and what little he had left ended with the brawl for all. He was awful in WCW, he was just done. Maybe 95 they get a year or two out of him?

Not sure how he would have done, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was pitched. Both Jim Ross and Bill Watts were working for the WWF at the time, both were big fans of Dr. Death, so I could see them pitching the idea to bring him in.

Wouldve been great IF he was built up correctly as a viable threat to Diesels title
But this is Vince we're talking here.He most likely wouldve been saddled with a bad gimmick.Instead of Pierre, I can see him getting the pirate treatment...

The booking would certainly have failed him. Also this would have been dependent on the kliqs Co-operation....

Getting away from AJPW at that time probably would’ve saved his body a great toll. Let’s be honest the WWF style would’ve been much more friendly even with longer touring. Whether he’d be booked correctly is a big if.

So like.... Jim Ross was in love with Dr. Death Steve Williams, right??
He had to have had some crush on him. I swear Jim Ross would suck the venom out of Dr. Death if he got bit in a rather unfortunate area of his body by a snake just because it's Dr. Death Steve Williams! Ha ha ha

I feel like Jim Ross loves football more than wrestling, it's like he always finds a way to invoke football. He even did so when Bill DeMott was facing a scandal. And Jim also invoked Bill Watts the same time.
Dr. Death would not have been a good fit in WWF. Not 1998, not 1995, not ever. Just two different styles of wrestling between he and WWF. He came to WWF in 1998 with no fan fare but that didn't matter. I don't even remember him being on TV until his first BFA match.
Jim probably loved Steve more than Steve loved him and he probably pumped Steve's ego up when he shouldn't have. Steve was quick to take part in the Oklahoma skits in WCW and held a bitterness against Jim until Steve became seriously ill. Maybe Jim shouldn't have pumped Steve up so much but ultimately it was Steve who couldn't make it in WWF. When a guy whose been a jobber in WWF (Bart) for a year and half legit beats you, it's not anyone else's fault, Steve-it's yours.
A guy like Austin or Foley who was mid or upper mid in WCW could adapt to the WWF but Dr. Death would never be able to. I hate that Steve died so young and with cancer but that whole BFA time period is so fascinating to me. It's a shame that a friendship ended, JR should have been smarter but more than anyone Steve should have been.
