The other WM4 thread here reminded me of an idea that I had several years back about the WM4 World Championship tournament.
At the time, if I remember correctly Jack Tunney (or some other WWF official) had said that both Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan would get a bye past the opening round and face each other, as "facing each other would be as if they had wrestled two men" (or words to that effect).
So my question for all of YOU Golden Era fans: Let's say that Hulk & Andre each had an opening round opponent anyway. Who would you insert as their matchups?
Personally, I look at it based on A. Someone that each one of them could dispose of easily (in order to guarantee they'd face each other in the quarterfinals), B. Someone who wasn't already involved in a high-profile match elsewhere on the card (such as Hercules or Brutus Beefcake), and C. Someone who was a big enough name that they would deserve to be in the tournament (storyline-wise, of course).
My picks would be: 1st round opponent for Andre: Ken Patera 1st round opponent for Hulk: King Harley Race
Each of those guys were in the battle royal, so they wouldn't be missed.
Who would be YOUR picks for Hulk's/Andre's opening round opponents?

Your choices are probably the best. Patera and Race didn't mean anything to the battle royal earlier in the show, so those two having a match against the two biggest stars would have been better for them. Andre wrestled Patera a bunch of times in their careers, but that was when Patera was the heel and Andre was the baby face, so this would have been a nice change. Hogan and Race had worked with each other before, so they could have made this match work. If not Race for Hogan, I believe King Kong Bundy was still with the company, he could have worked as the first opponent.

Patera and Race make the best options
I know that Andre the Giant's first match against Hogan happened at the SNME taping after WM III where it was Hogan and Patera vs. Andre and Hercules. So Patera and Andre had a history in that regard.
Race was wrestling Hogan on SNME before WM IV so again, that works.
To be honest, I would have rather seen Hogan and Andre have first round matches, it kind of sucked that both men eliminated themselves at the same time. But also that helped to make less matches and have a bye for Dibiase.

Patera/Race sound good to me.Bundy wouldve been a great option for Hogan but IIRC he left like a month or 2 prior
And for the record on the Hogan/Andre match in rd 2, Hogan def used the chair first so Andre shouldve won by DQ damnit!

Agree 100% with Patera and Race.
I'm guessing the "bye" was down to time constraints - but Andre could've squashed Patera in a 1-2 minute match. Hogan/Race is a bit more difficult as it would've been pure sacrilege to have Race squashed. It would have to go at least 7-10 minutes.
As much as I love the battle royal, I would've cut that entirely to get those matches in.

I wish Orndorff was still with the company at this time. He wouldve been a good first rounder for Andre
The whole Heenan Family history being the selling point
