Mount Rushmore: Wrestling Celebrities

Good idea for a topic and harder than I thought it would be.

I know that I should have Mr T and Cindy Lauper on here, but I decided to go for the ones that I actually saw and impacted me as a fan rather than those that are more historical if that makes sense.


Mike Tyson: I loved his interaction with Austin and felt that he added a great deal to the main event scene in early 98. Iron Mike was so hot at htis time, right off the whole ear biting thing, the WWF could not have gotten a better fit for their product at the time. I also really liked him as part of D-X and thought he was a lot of fun. Come to think of it, an HBK, HHH and Tyson three pack would be a great set, cloth shirts, with Tyson having an Austin one on underneath!


Dennis Rodman: I know it is easy to look back at WCW and their celebrity involvements and laugh, but I was a huge basketball fan at the time so seeing Rodzilla be part of the NWO was so much fun! I felt like he fit in perfectly with the group too and had a ton of personality in the role.

Chuck Norris: I know this may seem like an odd one, but me and my dad loved the Delta Force and Missing in Action movies and were all in on Walker Texas Ranger so seeing Chuck Norris be part of Survivor Series 94 was so much fun, especially when he did a roundhouse kick!

Kevin Federline: Now this is a real shocker for some of you to see I am sure. However, despite knowing nothing about this guy apart from he was married to Britney Spears, I was very impressed by how involved he got with everything. I think he is one of the more underrated celebrities to be part of the WWE to be honest with you, he really did embrace it and I thought he did a hell of a job.


I have a few honorable mentions, first of all, being a huge fan of The Naked Gun, I got a huge kick out of Leslie Neelsons's involvement at SummerSlam 94. Being 14 at the time, Pam Anderson at Royal Rumble and WrestleMania in 95 was something I loved a great deal. Another one I want to mention is Jon Heder. Most of the guest host stuff on RAW was garbage, but I felt lik ehe went above and beyond to have fun with it and he was a great heel, I loved his ripping on Don Johnson too! I would have put Zues/Tony Lister on the list, but to be honest, he was around right when I got into wrestling so I actually saw him more as a wrestler than an actor!

All four were either in a match or willing to work a match. All of them are S tier when it comes to star power or fame level and probably four of the biggest celebrity names wrestling has ever seen as a whole behind our former President. They all brought something unique to the table and none of them NEEDED wrestling but instead wanted to be there as fans of the business which is probably the most respectable aspect of it beyond them being willing to train and put the time/work in to understand how it all comes together on TV.

I didn't think this one would have been as hard, as I originally had Regis and Bob Uecker on my list. Regis, was a true fan and I don't think anyone hosted wrestlers on shows as much as him.

Wrestling wise, I don't think Donald Trump had a great or even good impact on WWF/E. Did any non wrestling fans buy Wrestlemania thinking he would get his hair cut?
Wrestlemania IV and V were a huge drop from Wresltemania III though whatever kind of a deal they had probably helped Vince put money elsewhere. The crowd wasn't really into it either and it wasn't even at Trump plaza.

The Raw "sale" was horrible. It brought along a period of mostly bad guest hosts just there for a pay day so whatever WWF/E gained from the original partnership they lost money hiring those folks. It also brought on real life stock decline for stockholders because many people believed it was a real sale. Why not? Wrestling primarily puts things over as real so why wouldn't people believe it? I personally think Vince has done more for Trump bringing him to wrestling fans minds, than Trump ever contributed to WWF/E and again, this is purely from a wrestling standpoint. I don't want this thread derailed or deleted. Growing up watching the early Wrestlemania's I have always been fascinated by his involvement with Vince from the very beginning with the large, horizontal venue of Wrestlemania IV and V surely not looking like the vertical building that was Trump Plaza.

Am I the only one that didn't think Tyson's inclusion was all that huge. The WM14 buy rate wasn't the biggest in history, each of the WrestleMania's after it had higher buy rates - until 2003. And the WWF didn't start beating WCW in the ratings War again until well after he was gone. They won some shows here and there after WrestleMania, but they didn't take back control until the summer. And, he really didn't do anything in the match either.

It was a tough call leaving off Mike Tyson. He only made a few appearances during the Road to Wrestlemania in 1998, but I really do think he helped turn business around. Andy Kaufmann was before my time, but appearing on David Letterman with Jerry the King and throwing coffee at him was huge at the time.
