Hey guys, I was huge into movie posters as a kid, and back then, it seemed they put thought and excitement into the poster. It was something you saw that made you want to see the movie, or at least have that cool art hanging on your wall. Same went for VHS/DVD art. These days, only some movie posters seem to reflect the style and care of the olden days, like the new Mario one, while many others all seem to be copy and paste generic.
Does anybody else think this too, or am I just not looking into them enough anymore? Any good examples of posters or promo items that live up to the past?
Thanks all.

Movie posters did used to be a lot better. I guess now it’s not as important for them to entice people to see the movie because of how many better ways there are to advertise. You could probably put movie posters under an umbrella of reasons why movies/going to the movie theater in general isn’t the same.

The reason they put so much care and attention in, is because they had the VHS case in mind. You want your movie to stand out when it stores.

We are definitely in the “group of people photoshopped together” era of movie posters.

I miss the simplicity of a good movie poster. Now they gotta try and fit every actor in the movie on posters and it’s just a jumbled mess

I collect 007 , misc kung fu , Bruce Lee , some Loren/Monroe , horror
Like to get them sgd but its costly and hard to complete a poster , provided all stars are alive , most 007 stars dead now

Someone asked Drew Struzan if he was doing the poster for Dial of Destiny, he declined to do it since he retired years ago. It would have been cool to have him come out of retirement for one last job

Posters had to convey more due to the limited touchpoints with advertising. Today, it’s easier to get content out and therefore, posters now capture the individual rather the tone or setting of the movie.

Yeah, I heard or read somewhere that the reason why more stylized, intricate posters have died out is because people/the general audience are more "attracted" to seeing who the featured actors are in the movie and it hooks them because of familiarity with the actors involved. Or something like that.
It's on my "to watch" list but I hear "24X36: A Movie About Movie Posters" dives into the subject more if you're interested.

I love movie posters and I think it's been bad even since the DVD days launched. I always remember hating the covers of the Ghostbusters DVDs and would have just loved the symbols with no or minimal text. They're overmarketed, oversaturated and sometimes just plain nasty. It's gotten exceptionally bad ever since The Force Awakens...the Star Wars sequels posters are some of the worst I can think of for one of my favorite franchises. Some general movies get away with some better ones here and there but it's few and far between. With that in mind I actually am moving so I started buying some movie posters, not even of favorite movies but just some of my favorites in terms of how they look so I'm looking forward to having those hanging up. I got really into it for a while. Here's one of my prize collection pieces:

It would have been cool to have him come out of retirement for one last job Struzan has come out of retirement several times already. I always liked Amsel's Indiana Jones posters better than Struzan's anyway. It's too bad he died young. Movie posters havent been any good for a long while already.

I have the small advance Jaws 2 (Coca Cola tie in ?) poster , nice art with the shark great 007 items , much of it 1st issue too.....you dont see much of those sgd 65 anniversary Dracula '58 : "Too bad shes bad" arg 1sh 1957 (typical false advertising , there is no such "nude" scene in it....lol. Safe for work natch) R70s "SLIH" ger 1sh , fairly common to find but nice This is the best "HD" poster imo , the art is so colorful and pops : I have most posters linen backed thus I use dinner plates to straighten them out in a video

the trailers move the movie sales now, they just don’t rely on posters to entice as most people sadly need more stimulation than a still image in today’s times.

I haven’t seen it, but fx’s tv show ‘the bear’ uses movie poster style art for their seasons that aren’t bad.
