This was brought up in the "Ask Steve Anything" thread, and I thought it was pretty interesting... So, as you all are likely aware, we've come to know on every Mattel WWE figure package Bret "Hitman" Hart is written with a space between hit and man. Post in the thread: Hi Steve, Why do Mattel write Bret ‘Hit man’ Hart on all packaging instead of Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart??? There is no space between hit and man. I don’t know why, but I find it really annoying! I thought this was weird....and then I realized it's been happening literally forever. It started with his 2nd Hasbro release. But there's some interesting little differences I found while browsing. Starting with the LJN....look at how they did it! Bre tt "Hit Man" Hart Then, here's the first Hasbro- We're back to "Hitman" But his 2nd Hasbro?: "Hit Man" The first BCA's used the Superstar logos at the time, so that's a little different, but then his BCA series 3 and all following BCA's have the space WCW his first Toybiz is just Bret Hart, we also have his figure dressed as a Hitman...so that kind of had to be what it was his BATB figure both of which are Hitman When Jakks got the license and started classics, every package was Hit Man or just Bret Hart. Mattel has been Hit Man since the beginning... or so I thought...... Check out the Ringside KOTR exclusive and the Hall of Champions 2 Pack- Also correct me if I'm wrong, but Bret didn't use the Hitman nickname in WCW, but on the Bret/Goldberg elite 2 pack they have it there, which would be historically inaccurate. There also has yet to be any Mattel with just "Bret Hart" on the package. I can't think of any other superstar that's had so many different versions of their gimmick name on figure packaging. and most of them are actually in-correct when compared to how they actually used it on TV

I can just hear someone in some BS corporate position who has to be overly conscious of public image for either Mattel or WWE saying “we can’t have toys depicting the name of an assassin” so they space so it sounds like “he’s the man that hits people” and it’s just pure cringe 🤣🤣🤣
I’m amazed Vince didn’t see them in 85 and go “he needs a flashier presentation.” And after pairing the hart foundation, I’m surprised he didn’t “Okay pal, you’re not longer the hitman, you’re the Hit Maker! And you’re gonna be a wrestling Bass Guitarist! And Jim, you’re be the record breaker! And you’re gonna have 45s printed on your ass, and you’re gonna be the drummer, and You’re gonna be the new Rock and Wrestling duo and then Vince just snorts even more soda snow and starts laughing maniacally

Check you're spelling when naming topics, alot of people would'nt even realize your talking about the legendary Brett "Hitmen" Clark. I can just hear someone in some BS corporate position who has to be overly conscious of public image for either Mattel or WWE saying “we can’t have toys depicting the name of an assassin” Hey. I find that offensive.

Pretty sure it should always have been "Hit Man" although its not cosmetically pleasing. I dont believe the term/word "Hitman" is even in the dictionary.
People always put words together that dont belong....Im still trying to figure out how people think "alot" is a real word.

Dictionaries are not rule books, they’re records of what is identified as functional language. At some point “alot” will be documented in dictionaries because of its prevalence and “hitman” makes more sense as the formal term since everyone says it as a singular phrase.

It started out as hit man in society but became hitman over time.

I could have sworn I read somewhere, maybe in Bret's autobiography, that it was originally "Hit Man". It was meant to mean a puncher/boxer, not a paid assassin which would be "Hitman". It may have changed in 1991 when he became a singles wrestler, they seemed to lean in on the "Hitman" part of his name, that's when he started adding the skulls to his ring gear and they gave him the sharpshooter finisher.

In his book, Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling, Hart talks about the origin of his nickname “Hitman.” In the 18th chapter of the book, he writes that he and Jimmy Hart were trying to come up with a nickname for his wrestling persona for many weeks. And on April 27, 1985, a few weeks after Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns’ knockout loss against “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler, Hart read about him retiring from boxing in a newspaper and immediately liked how “Hitman Hart” sounded and that was when he decided to use “Hitman” as his wrestling nickname.
They met years later and Bret even got Hearns to appear in a segment on Raw with him:

I believe the licensor prefers it written Di-Di P. (with a period specifically, not a decimal point) Whereas the talent prefers "Diamond" Dallas "DDP" Page (Falkinburg) - "The People's Champion"And yes unfortunately Mattel's internal WWE "style guide" specifies that DDP figures must NEVER have a serious headscan...

They met years later and Bret even got Hearns to appear in a segment on Raw with him: Yeah, I remember that as well. He was a big fan of Tommy Hearns and took the nickname from him. It's funny that years later they were able to have a moment together in the WWF, with Bret accusing Tommy of stealing his nickname when it was Bret who stole the nickname from Tommy. Gotta love pro wrestling. I do remember it being said that it was more about being a puncher than a paid assassin. I'm starting to wonder if how it is spelled depends on the person/company creating the packaging.

My two cents as a fan, for whatever it’s worth, is the two spellings can be used interchangeably and comes down to personal preference. Neither is wrong but I do prefer “Hitman” myself.

Speaking of ringname variations - I prefer Konnan over Konan... Hint hint! Wolfpac as standard - with NWO Black&White as chase!
