For me it’s always Hitman. And a lot is two words but I usually put them together 95% of the time. Just put the letter "S" in front of HitMan and call it a day Stone Cold you ain’t! You’re dead to me!

Well, I was hoping I could clear this all up & refer to the "HitMan" himself..... but damn, I'm really not sure..... For my two cents..... Who cares?

My two cents as a fan, for whatever it’s worth, is the two spellings can be used interchangeably and comes down to personal preference. Neither is wrong but I do prefer “Hitman” myself. For me I just always think "Hitman", because I'm pretty sure that's how the WWE presented it on TV with his nameplates over entrances. Honestly I didn't have the time to go back and look at entrances. When I think of the way he was announced, and the way people say it in real life...it just leads more "hitman". Like Fink never Said "coming down the aisle....."Bret. Hit. Man. Hart! I can understand though, them wanting to stylize it on toys with the space, because it's just more aesthetically pleasing

WWE 2K23 has his nameplate during his entrance as Bret “The Hitman” Hart
this video shows the same from when he gave the penny tag belts to Kidd & Smith:

It's HITMAN and always will be. That's how he signs and how WWF would print his name in the magazine and on cards. It's stuff like this and the out of nowhere, inaccurate Height/Weight combos Mattel does that drives me nuts. We all know Hogan was 6'8", 303 lbs FOREVER, yet Mattel comes up with wonky numbers. Same with Shawn, Bret, Warrior, etc. Their height & weight were literally announced every week and unchanged for 10 years and yet Mattel can't get it right. Mind boggling.

This feels like some Mandela Effect type of stuff lol. I've been a fan since the late '80s and he's always been Bret "Hitman" Hart to me. His WWE DVD's, his book, and other merch all say "HITMAN" on them. That's good enough for me.
Funnily enough, he would occasionally be announced as "The Hitman" Bret Hart, particularly by Vince McMahon on commentary.

It's interesting to me that it's written Bret "Hitman/Hit Man" Hart, because I always like the "The Hitman" as opposed to without the "The" prefix.
I remember growing up and always hearing the announcers say "Bret, The Hitman, Hart". Yet a thread on the Classic Wrestling section showed that in WWF prior to WCW, he was never referred to as "The Hitman". And it surprised me, I can't un-hear it now.
And to Chicago's question, yes WCW always referred to him as The Hitman during ring announcements/presentation.s

The Hitman, Bret Hart. But if the nickname was in between his first and last name, then it was always spoken without tha the... Bret "Hitman" Hart.

Bret is likely blaming Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan for this.

Bret is likely blaming Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan for this. And if he is then it probably is their fault. Especially HBK’s.

Bret is likely blaming Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan for this. "My name use to be spelled Hitman...Then Goldberg kicked me in the head and split the name into Hit Man. Goldberg is an unsafe worker. I never hurt anyone in my career. The only thing I asked Bill was not to hurt me" - Likely Bret Hart

It’s clearly a case of Vince screwing Bret again.

In my head it’s “Hit Man” when it’s solo but if you add the word “the” then it becomes “The Hitman”. So, again this is how my brain works, it’s Bret “Hit Man” Hart or Bret “The Hitman” Hart.

They call him The Hitman because, in the ring, he blasted people in the face with protein farts
