I don’t think I did anything wrong here.

I don’t normally jump into these arguments, because there’s no point.

But it’s Hulk’s birthday, so I’ll get this thread closed by going scorched earth.

Wrestling became a TV business in the 80’s. You can argue until the cows come home about how your favorite would’ve been better or could’ve been able to handle it just as well. No. Nobody could have done it better. Terry Bollea has that shameless self promotion gene that allowed him to ride that wave for as long as he did. Wrestling might not even be around today if it weren’t for Vince and Hogan. If it was it wouldn’t be nearly as big. WWE certainly wouldn’t be on Fox or sold for billions without Hogan’s blood, sweat, and tears.

Hogan wasn’t as big in 94, but his name still got WCW Nitro, which kept WCW viable. Monday Night Wars, Attitude Era, all of that was a direct response to getting f*cked in the ass by Nitro. None of this happens without Hogan.

He passed the torch twice, and he made a lot of guys. Yeah, he held your favorites down. Boo hoo, they didn’t get to beat him in a fake fight or for a fake belt. They still made their millions. He’s kind to fans (unlike many others), he never injured anyone, he didn’t get anyone fired, he never beat his wife or kids, and damn sure never committed a murder/suicide. I don’t care what he did or said. He’s a flawed human, he’s a selfish businessman, and he shoots off at the mouth like nobody else, but as people go he’s a pretty good guy overall. But let’s keep bringing up something stupid that he said years ago that has never been reflected in his actions. If this were anyone else it would be forgotten.

I don’t respect people who don’t respect what he’s done or recognize that without Hogan, whether they were fans or not, made wrestling big business. The world was changing, the race to the new millennium was fueled by television, and he was the perfect guy at the perfect time to rule the television era of wrestling. He borrowed from two of the greatest showmen of all time, combined their powers, and created the superhero that was needed to thrive in the wild, colorful 80’s.

He held on to his position with an iron grip because he didn’t want to let it go, but he’d have lost the spot long ago if he wasn’t big enough business to justify his position. It’s all about the money. You don’t like him? So what? Too bad. No matter how hard you try you’re not going to be able to re-write history to diminish his importance. You can hate him and cry about how horrible he is all that you want. The fact that wrestling is such a huge TV business today is a testament to how big he was in the 80’s and late 90’s. In-ring? Not great in the technical sense, but wrestling is showbusiness, not a sport. It’s about the fans, not the wrestlers, and he’s done a lot for the fans.

You might not like his style, you may not like his methods, and you may just not like him, but if you claim that he’s not the most important professional wrestler ever, you’re lying to yourself.
