With names such as RVD, Jeff Hardy, Booker T, and a returning Kane, no way fans get behind HHH at all had they run a tournament. I was 12 so I definitely wasn’t rooting for Triple H for any reason whatsoever. Kane should’ve won it at No Mercy and I’ll die on that hill Obviously HHH couldn’t loose to everyone, but I think what makes the reign of terror so annoying is that so much potential was squandered during his reign over Raw. RVD was rivaling Stone Cold and Rocky in merch sales in ‘01/02 (confirmed by Pritchard), yet never got to beat HHH. Kane was over like crazy when he returned in 2002 yet his momentum and whole character were destroyed in a 4 week feud with HHH. Booker T had done a lot to get over with the fans after the terrible booking during the Invasion angle, yet one loss to HHH and he was doomed to midcard hell for the next three years. Goldberg managed to get over by SummerSlam despite questionable booking, yet his whole momentum was killed at that PPV and never recovered (Pritchard said this was on Goldberg for not going on a tour, but how do you have him loose with a rabid crowd so behind him and an injured Hunter). Orton was the hottest heel in the company in ‘04, yet was turned face quickly just to lose to HHH. Eugene was over big, yet was reduced to jobber status once he did the job to HHH. Yes, HHH winning so much did make Benoit and Batista’s wins feel much bigger, but Benoit was a transitional champ. There were no long term plans to keep him in the main event one his title reign was over. Batista benefitted the most from beating HHH, but look how many guys were destroyed by HHH to get there. I will die on the hill that had HHH put over one of RVD, Kane, or Booker for the belt that it wouldn’t have affected Benoit or Batista’s eventual wins.

I don’t think H holding the title as long and much as he did benefitted the title more than dropping it a time or two would’ve hurt it. That title went three years and the only champion other that HHH that wasn’t transitional was Batista

That was a blood feud. The KLIQ history and HHH turning on Nash and HBK was the story. The belt became secondary. Nothing would have changed letting Booker hold the belt for a few months and feud with Jericho while HHH and Nash did their thing. HHH could get the belt back with Evolution and things go on as normal.

It’s bad that there’s so many alternative options that wouldn’t have hurt HHH and would’ve helped numerous others but all they ended up doing was just helping HHH at the detriment to any other main eventer
