Cancer really sucks. He died years after a cancer diagnosis, his team said Monday. He was 70. "Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness," according to a statement posted to his Facebook. "Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit."

This really hits me hard. The guy was in a league of his own. I had the pleasure of seeing The Pee Wee Herman Show twice when he was performing at the Stephen Sondheim Theater in New York. So sad. I was hoping he would have released a book or did the autograph rounds again. Good night, PeeWee. Thank you for your unique entertainment.

RIP.
Watched a little of Playhouse but I'm surprised he was 70 figured mid 50's or early 60's.

Yeah this is a rough one for me. Former RAW Guest Host, too! But Pee Wee was such a big part of TV for my brothers and I growing up..... such quotable lines from Pee Wee's Big Adventure.... "Paging Mr. Herman?" I still crack up every time! Big Top Pee Wee was also a fun ride! I can't tell you how many times my brothers & I said "ALL i WANTED WAS A MEASLY SANDWICH!" "Sorry Otis.... Sorry Zeke.... GAME'S OVER. Pee Wee Herman WANTS a pickle!" And then there was the MASTERPIECE called Pee Wee's Christmas Special.... it was (and for me - STILL IS) a holiday tradition. The guest stars, OH the guest stars! Little Richard, Magic Johnson, Cher, Dinah Shore, Charro, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Grace Jones, Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg.... for us 80's kids this was just a gem. I still dust off the DVD and ..... it just doesn't feel like Christmas at my house until we've watched this amazing special.... Thank you Pee Wee.... for so many great, funny childhood memories. In my mind, I still believe Dinah Shore is singing "The Million Days of Christmas" to a fake Pee Wee in that video-phone-booth!

I was in complete shock opening IG to see the post about this about barely 5 minutes after it went up. I love Pee-wee. A huge influence on me as a person...solely in terms of just providing comfort growing up in the idea that it's ok to be goofy and be yourself. Pee-wee's Big Adventure is also a masterpiece and remains not only one of my favorite movies of all time but for me, while I love Playhouse, will be what I consider his best contribution.
These are tough tears to get through but I'm glad Pee-wee has been part of my life and I'm taking comfort in that fact.

His cameo at WM 27 was one of the highlights of the show, so there's that.

He had a statement made for when the time come, that was posted after he passed. The way I looked at it, he had nothing to apologize. Dealing with something like that, he had all the right to keep it private it he wanted. Just like when Norm McDonald passed, we had no idea he had been battling cancer for years. Plain and simple, it was his right to either hide or share something like that.
“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”

I need to post the pictures I have. I still think he would have had the greatest garage sale ever.

Terrible news. My daughter and I watched Pee-wee's Big Adventure last year for the first time together, and she loved it so much we ended up watching it again a couple weeks later. Such a great movie. Paul Reubens was a fantastic character actor, which is the way I’ll remember him. A true icon in Hollywood when it comes to character work. Rest in peace.

He was a little before my time but I liked his movies when I was younger and I had dolls of him as hand me downs from my brother. Very sad to hear regardless, though. R.I.P.

Genuinely never seen him outside of WM27. But he seems to be beloved. RIP. He was very big on teaching lessons about being yourself, being goofy, being different, being artistic, being true to yourself . Besides being a comedic genius, the playhouse was just so heartfelt, and taught so many amazing lessons, even ones that went against the grain back then.

My nephew & me had tickets to see him in New York for the 35th anniversary of Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Then the pandemic hit & it got canceled. If he knew he had cancer for 7 years, I'm thinking that the anniversary show/tour was his "one last hurrah" to his fans.
So sad.

If it wasn't for Pee Wee Herman, we wouldn't have gotten this awesome score from Danny Elfman

If it wasn't for Pee Wee Herman, we wouldn't have gotten this awesome score from Danny Elfman Damn, this sent me down a rabbit hole. I haven't been able to watch the movie yet, I don't know if I'm ready, but it's one of my favorite movies of all time and the score is legendary. Such a snapshot of that moment in time. Has anyone watched it since he passed?
