I know that for years the comparison was always that Demolition were a Road Warriors rip off. I never once thought that ever. Nothing about those two teams seemed a-like in any way.
However, the Powers of Pain and the Road Warriors I felt were completely the same.
Both teams had similar builds, same hair cuts, face paint, and even did the same finisher. Where Animal held the guy on his shoulders, Warlord would hold the guy up. Barbarian and Hawk would both come off with flying clotheslines.
With all that being said, I find it rather interesting that Vince McMahon chose to break up the Powers of Pain and give them different looks as singles wrestlers, right before the Legion of Doom entered the WWF.
Do you think that was by design?? That Vince felt both teams looked too similar and didn't want fans to be confused when watching his show??

Pretty sure it was agreed Powers of Pain would be split up when Road Warriors came in Which sucks because I loved Powers of Pain I always thought the same, but just checked and Road Warriors finished up with Turner at the end of May 1990. PoP last tag match was a house show right before WM 6 at the end of March, with the split happening on TV before that. TV was taped at least 3 weeks in advance, so they were split in early March, 3 months before Road Warriors finished up down south. |

he prob felt 3 face painted teams was too many and also wanted to something different with warlord/barbarian anyway
i wish they'd have stayed a team and fueded with LOD for a bit 1st
i actually liked the POP more then LOD in the wwf

Vince knew Hawk & Animal weren't renewing with Turner & coming North so he split POP. They hadn't signed with Titan but he knew they were en route.
They should have been the RWs first feud then split. Their overall initial feud should have been with Fuji. Demolition then turns heel and goes back to Fuji. Prichards podcast covered them lately(as much as it could because he was fired in summer 1991) its a decent listen.
seems like Hawks issues had Vince losing faith in them early on.

Def agree with them being the first feud for LOD
Their split came outta nowhere. They were building up a feud with the Rockers one minute then next they were running the angle where Fuji sold em off.
Shame they didnt get a better send off

Shame they didnt get a better send off It sure is but when you look back? Vince never had much interest in them. When He couldn't sign the RWs in 88 Vince got POP and just tried to insert them into that storyline instead as the faces that would topple Demolition. when POP failed miserably in this respect and Demolition got over HUGE as babyfaces? they were a complete afterthought for Vinnie. BUT the booking of them at SSeries 89 is a buck against that trend? |

I loved the look of both Barbarian and Warlord during their singles runs. Granted, they only ever really beat jobbers, but they were fun to watch each week.
I so wanted a Hasbro Barbarian (and Haku) figure as a kid!
Also a bit of a hidden gem is Big Boss Man Vs Barbarian from Royal Rumble 91. I loved the whole "Boss Man's Mama" angle they did with the Heenan family and this is the best match from it in my opinion. I get why they didn't have Boss Man win the IC title as it was being saved for Bret, but it did leave that whole feud flat with the ending.

Vince was just doing long term story telling is all.
For The Baron and POP were managed by Paul Jones in NWA, so let's continue that in the WWF with the tree of them working together ha ha ha
