Most people don't even recognize the dreaded "drop down" as an offensive move. It seems to come across more as a part of the routine you get when guys are running the ropes. It's just guys going through the motions to get to a specific spot.
But the "drop down" is indeed a move. Isn't it? You send a guy to the ropes, run after him, and then drop down flat on your stomach when he comes back off the ropes in an attempt to "trip him." This move has done by almost everyone, thousands and thousands and thousands of times. Has it ever actually worked?
I've been watching wrestling since 1985. I don't know if I've ever actually seen two guys play out a successful drop down/trip that wasn't a botch. Was the drop down ever actually used by someone as a part of their move set? Or has it always just been apart of the routine to add the athleticism?
Thoughts?

Calling it a "move" is a bit of a misnomer. When you say move, most people think of something you do to an opponent that is indeed offensive.
It's more of a setup. The idea is to get the opponent off guard and set yourself up for your next offensive move. Its psychology is not so much to trip the opponent but to get them to keep running at the ropes so you can then attack like AJ Styles does or grab a hold of them.
There's many more things I'd read into before this one. Like why would wrestlers climb out of a cage when they could go over and ask the door to be opened....?

I believe it worked in a tag team match pitting London/Kendick vs. MNM for the Tag Titles at Judgment Day 2006 if my memory is correct on that.
I think Nitro tripped on either London or Kendrick, but again, it's been 15 years or so since I last watched it.

Warrior Hogan pulled off a nice version of this on each other really building the early stages of their WM VI encounter. Both turned it into bodyslsms with Warrior no selling and Hogan selling it as the first move to inflict some damage on either guy.

It's a move you could never do in video games, which shows you its effectiveness
