Since his run as longest IC Champ just ended after 35 years , figure I'd make a tribute thread Not the greatest in the ring but man what a character. You couldnt wait to see his ass get kicked. Fantastic heel during his era Elvis who???

Definitely hated him with a passion as a kid and his shoot interviews are entertaining regardless if he's lying or not.

This gimmick was perfect for Wayne Farris, and Wayne Farris was perfect for this gimmick.
I loved him as a kid. Possibly because I was also an Elvis fan.

Definitely not the best in-ring worker, but he was a tremendous character - one of the better performed ones at the time. He was perfect for the gimmick, and he did an amazing job. He did what he was supposed to do, draw people to the building. It didn't matter who he was facing, whether it was a top guy, mid-card guy, or a jobber to the stars, you wanted to see him get his butt kicked. A great heel champion for sure. Such a shame that WWE is hellbent on breaking all records, I'm starting to think the Roman is going to break Bruno's record. I still think they should have brought Honky out during the match with Shorty G and Gunther, had him interfere in the match and cost Gunther the title and the record. Then at the next PPV, Gunther regains the belt and goes on another long run. They could even build it up that Gunther is hell bent on breaking the record with this reign, then it becomes a will he or won't he for the reign.

Loved his interview after losing the IC title and getting confused thinking the crowd was there to see him perform! One hell of a character. Played a few good ‘tunes’ with his guitar as well.

One of the best heels ever...no doubt. He generated crazy heat by worming his way out of being beat for the strap over & over.
One of vinces most important guys in 87 & 88.

As I said in my YouTube video about Honky Tonk Man the other day...
"Gunther may be the longest reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion.... but Honky Tonk Man will always be the longest reigning WWF Intercontinental Champion!"
Plus, years from now, more people will remember the Honky Tonk Man than Gunther. People will say, "I remember him when I was a kid, he wrestled that Macho Man guy! My brother hated Honky!"
Unless you are a real fan right now of wrestling, nobody is gonna remember Gunther and the matches he had.
So Honky's legacy will live on!

I love Honky. Sad day when warrior beat him. As a kid I really enjoyed his run

To me, it feels like two different companies. Like the new day beating Demolitions tag team championship reign. They didn't beat Demolitions WWF reign,as far as I'am concerned, Demolition still holds the record.

I think in honor of the record, Mattel needs to do an Ultimate Edition Honky Tonk Man figure. I'd go with the Main Event from 1988, the largest audience in wrestling history. White and gold jumpsuit with IC title and new head sculpts: Traditional light blue and red tights, new black guitar mold (non-breakable):

I was watching the Main Event from Feb 88 not too long ago.....Good God Honky had some serious heat taking on the Macho Man. the pop when Honky misses Savage and hits Hart with the knee is nuts.

He played the "chicken sh*t heel" so well. Not much of a technician, but it's said that he was very easy to work with in the ring.
But don't believe 95% of what he says about deceased wrestlers in his shoot interviews.
And you have to give him credit for still having the sideburns to this day.

Personally, I had a love/hate relationship with him at the time. I HATED him, and couldn't wait to see him get beat. For that reason, I had a ton of respect for him. He knew that his job was to be a bad guy, and he executed it perfectly. He got nuclear heat, everywhere he went. Today, I have nothing but love and respect for HTM. I re-watch his past work with so much appreciation. Some of my favorite moments: I only got to see him wrestle live once. In Boise, during his feud with Jimmy Snuka. Snuka pinned HTM that night. I have some VERY dimly-lit/fuzzy pics around here somewhere. I couldn't wait to get his Hasbro figure, and it was SO hard to find. I finally found it three towns over in a local drug store. I was super excited, and still have him today. I loved loved LOVED how confused he was after he himself got the "El Kabong" treatment from his own guitar and was pinned by Dusty at SummerSlam '89. I thought that his post-match interview was hilarious. I thought that it was interesting that he was directly tied in with Brutus Beefcake during the first three Survivor Series PPVs. '87: HTM pins Beefcake. '88: HTM & Beefcake fought to a double-countout. '89: Beefcake pins HTM. I REALLY wish that he could have stayed longer in WCW.

Another personal HTM fact that I just remembered: I always select HTM, along with Macho, as my tag team in the "WWF Superstars" arcade game!

Always on point, and in character. And I agree, his interview with Sean Mooney after his match with Dusty at SSL89 was perfect. Interesting factoid about Honky and Brutus competing at the first 3 Survivor Series PPVs, I never thought about it.
