It was WCW's answer to Saturday Night's Main Event.

Definitely their answer to WWF Saturday Night's Main Event.
Also with Ted Turner owning WCW and TBS, they were able to put some of the Clash of the Champions on during the WWF PPVs to have competition. The Wrestlemania IV and V shows demonstrate that nicely.
By the way, I feel that some of the Clash of the Champions shows were more exciting than the PPV shows WCW put on.

I also thought Clashes were like PPVs and they were a lot bigger than SNME shows.
I was more of a WWF fan but I strongly preferred the Clashes over WWF free TV.
Some of their matches were pure filler and you'd usually have some of the middle years with a jobber or two but it was still nice to see them. Mike Graham and I think Greg Gagne both claim they told Bischoff no more Clashes after Hogan came. They ran a few more in late 1994 and 1995 but they kind of disappeared through most of 96 and the last one I think was August 1997. Leave it to Graham or Gagne to take something special or put a halt to it.
