Was it expected?Did people think it could happen OR was it a complete shocker this young guy just beat Hogan for the title?

Watching it as an 11 year old? I never expected it in 100 years. I was totally shocked by it. I doubt uncle Dave or any of the insiders were either.

Something I've always wondered as well was, was the reason he dropped it back so quick because they were originally going with the Hogan/Flair match at Wrestlemania and was that why they did Taker winning in the first place, so that Flair cost Hogan and that added extra motivation for their match.

I remember I was 11 years old as well watching that show, and I couldn't believe that Undertaker won the WWF Title. I felt bad for the dude dressed up as Hulk Hogan in the front row, to see the Hulkster lose the WWF Title. He as also at King of the Ring 93 when Hogan lost the WWF Title to Yokozuna too.
As for Tuesday In Texas PPV, the rumour has it that Vince wanted to try weekly PPVs then. That's what I read many years ago, now who's to say that is the truth or just a rumour. The PPV didn't sell out like he had hoped so that idea was canned.
That could have been the reason to have Undertaker vs. Hogan so quickly in a rematch a week later. I was also shocked when Jack Tunney stripped Hogan of the WWF Title after that PPV event too.
What an interesting era for the World Wrestling Federation from the summer of 1991 right up until the summer of 1992. So many things were changing left and right, you really had no idea what way they were going with things.

That's how I always saw it. This was to really build the feud up between Hogan and Flair for WM8. Flair costs Hogan the belt to Taker, Hogan wins it back the following week only to have it stripped by On The Take Tunny... This sets up the Royal Rumble where the winner becomes the WWF champion. Flair wins the Rumble. Hogan gets selected as the #1 contender, goes to WM8 and beats Flair for the belt. I always figured they went this route because either Hogan or Vince didn't want Hogan losing to Flair, that would be like saying the NWA/WCW was better than the WWF. So, Hogan losing to Taker, then the title belt getting stripped allowed Hogan to not take a clean lose, or even a single loss to Flair, but Flair still gets the WWF belt which sets up Hogan beating Flair (WWF beating NWA/WCW) at WM8. Plans appeared to change because the house shows were not drawing like Vince hoped with Hogan vs. Flair. Then Hogan was going to leave again after WM8 to film the Nanny. So, I'm guessing Vince switch the program from Hogan/Flair to Flair/Macho so he could have an active champion wrestling at shows, and a feud to build to and sell. I've also heard/read that Vince was wanting to make a change and wanted to see if Taker could be champion. But that doesn't make a lot of sense, because I've also read that Vince never really saw Taker as a "champion" at the beginning of his run and into the mid 90s; he saw him more as an "attraction". So, I guess no one really knows. Man, if Vince ever wrote a tell-all book about everything during his time with the company (how feuds came about, decisions he made, plans he wanted to go with but didn't), and he was honest about everything, that could be the greatest selling wrestling book of all-time. To answer the post's question, yes, it was shocking that Hogan lost.

Def shocking as Hogan losing in big matches during this run was rare to say the least
But man looking back they built up Taker and his character to perfection that first year.Love how they made em a legit threat to the title with the ''Gravest Challenge'' tagline
And the Bobby line ''HULKAMANIA IS DEAD...LONG LIVE THE UNDERTAKER!!'' will always be classic

Got in to wrestling a couple of months after and didn’t see this until a year after it took place. Retrospectively though I would put it as a shock (not taking into account anything that happened after the event). Taker at the time seemed like a typical Hogan foe, for the great bald one to ultimately overcome. The fact that Taker got a pinfall (albeit tainted) over Hulk was something I doubt anyone saw coming. Looking at the build up, I would have said that Taker was someone to keep Hulk occupied until he faced, and ultimately beat, Flair at WM8.

At the time of SSeries 91 they were all in on Flair vs Hogan at WM8....no doubt.

As a 10 year old newcomer to American wrestling, I was shocked as one of my pals hyped Hogan to me as being completely unbeatable and had been showing me tapes of Hogan’s biggest wins. I’d been watching since just after SummerSlam ‘91 and thanks to the weekly shows and the Battle Royal at the Royal Albert Hall show, I had a good idea of where people stood on the card. Taker seemed like a dark horse since you couldn’t seem to hurt him much, but I was sure Hogan would find a way to win. I wasn’t surprised how the match went or Hogan Hulking-up on the first Tombstone, but almost couldn’t believe my eyes when he was Tombstoned onto the chair - that looked painful…….for Taker’s knees!!! And then the shock really came when the three count was made!!
After the rematch I felt everything was back to normal and then Jack Tunney vacated the world title, but rather than be sad, I found it quite intriguing. That short title run helped Undertaker solidify his status as a special attraction though.
