Man I was shocked by this.....it really made me "WTF at the TV". came out to a huge pop when it looked like he was gonna save JR...then we see him turn on JR with a great promo. I just watched this over today.
Its so rare that heel turns really shock you...but in Nov 01? This one really got me.
thoughts?

I mentioned this when we watched the post SSeries 01 Raw last week on RWN. I said how it was weird Taker was nowhere to be seen but looking back it makes sense as they wanted fans to forget about em(The Naitch return helped in that) as they prepared for the turn the following week
Def something nobody saw coming. His brief heel run here was the only time I had any interest in the biker character

Definitely was a shocking heel turn. But it was fresh since he was face since 1992. And it got him a new hair cut out of the turn too, plus one more WWE Title reign.

I loved The American Badass Taker and felt Big Evil was a good evolution of it. At the time I hated the heel turn, it just felt so out of place the way he turned on JR and the stuff about kissing ass he was saying

Oh yeah, I kind of forgot about that heel turn cause during that time, every wrestler seemed in between anyhow.

The Backlash PPV with Flair as the referee??
You know what's strange, Austin vs. Taker never had any good matches before that. Well, they had an okay match at In Your House May 1997 show for the WWF Title, but that also involved the Hart Foundation too so that made it interesting.

I always thought the Cold Day In Hell match was their best together
The Backlash match dragged IMO

Hated the Biker gimmick and thought his 2001 run was mediocre. However, his heel turn made me jump out of my seat. Heel Taker is rare and it was only good period of his biker run.
However, his haircut broke my heart as a kid, he already didn't feel like The Undertaker and loosing the hair was like a door getting slammed shut.

I will also admit to not being a huge fan of the American Badass gimmick. It didn't help that The Undertaker wasn't in the best physical shape in 2000-2001, but that run was pretty forgettable. I thought his heel turn was great though and made that incarnation of the character at least palatable for me for that brief period throughout 2002.
Unfortunately, he reverted back to being a babyface for all of 2003 which sucked. I'm sure he loved that era simply because he could finally ease up on protecting kayfabe. Just didn't do much for me.

The very one. Winner got a title shot at Judgement Day...I really thought we were gonna see Austin vs Hogan finally.

Just didn't do much for me. when he turned baby again before Summerslam 02 he had a great run for a couple of months. that HIAC vs Lesnar in October was f*cking phenomenal. one of the worst hardway cuts ever too
