just came across this article and thought it was pretty cool. 30 yrs ago it could have been totally different for the macho man. id prob change a few things in my rebooking for savage in 93, like it being savage/bret at mania but still a great read and i love his pics. MKSavage i think you'll like this one www.goldengimmick.com/savage-93-reimagined

Well, I do like giving Savage the title for most of 1993. Just a shame that he wasn't wrestling at WM9, KOTR93, or SummerSlam 93, and he only made it on the 1993 Survivor Series PPV because of issues with Mr. Perfect. Unfortunately, after the stuff with the Flair title switch, Vince just seemed to sour on Randy being a fulltime wrestler going forward. From what Lanny has said, Randy wanted to have a big feud with Shawn Michaels that would last about a year with Shawn going over and "retiring" Savage and sending him to the announce table for good. But Vince said no to that, so instead he got a pretty lackluster feud in late 1993/early 1994 with Crush. It's kind of is a shame, from things I have heard, Savage would have been willing to work with a lot of the younger talent, even put them over to help build for the future. Feuds with HBK, Bret, Razor, Diesel, Taker, Owen, Davey Boy, Luger, Tatanka, Bam Bam, etc. could have been good. Even though I have never heard anyone say this, I would be willing to bet that the final straw for Savage might have been Vince putting the WWF title on Bob Backlund in late 1994. After saying to Savage that he wanted to go younger as the excuse for why Savage was in the booth so much and not getting big time feuds with guys, for Vince to put the title on Backlund in late 1994 must have been a kick in the ***** for Randy. Imagine Randy in Backlund's spot. He turns heel against Bret in late 1994, then takes the title off of him at the Survivor Series. He faces Bret in a rematch at RR95, but it ends in a double DQ. Diesel, who is on the rise, wins the Royal Rumble match and faces Savage at WM11. Depending on what they want to do, Savage could either retain the title over Diesel, or Diesel could win the belt. If Diesel wins, Shawn Michaels could come out on Raw the following night and say he deserves the next title shot against Diesel. Savage comes out and attacks Shawn saying nope, he is still the #1 contender. This attack turns HBK babyface, when he returns, Savage and HBK could have the feud that Randy wanted all along. Randy could help get Shawn over during late 1995/early 1996, on his way to the WWF championship. One of Shawn's first title defenses could be against Randy Savage. Shawn wins which retires Savage and sends him to the announce booth after all. Or, since the announce booth in the WWF was getting kind of crowded at the time (Vince, Lawler, JR, Perfect), Savage could jump ship to WCW right at the beginning of the NWO run. Fun to think about it. Also, I do like a lot of these re-imagined posters for the PPVs:

Vince: "We want to go younger now, Randy."
Also Vince from 1994 - 1996: "We need Piper, Lawler, Backlund, Jake Roberts, Dory Funk Jr, and hell, even Dick Murdoch to make some appearances for us, dammit!"

Can only imagine what Mach was thinking from the booth watching Piper/Lawler main event KOTR No surprise he would be gone 5 months later

vince was tard for thinking these guys were to old and he needed a new generation thing. by 94/95 he was stuck with some weak ass rosters and those "old" guys like hulk, savage, etc were puittn on good matches until the end of the decade

I don’t get why Hogan got to appear at WM9 and KOTR but they couldn’t find an in ring role for Savage.
I don’t know for sure but everything I read about Savage, he was willing to not only work with younger talent, but also put them over. With the roster starting to thin, having someone like Savage giving the rub to up and comers would have been great for business. Comparing his attitude with the stories about Hogan refusing to work with Bret at Summerslam that year makes the decision not to utilise Savage as a performer all the more baffling.

I personally liked Mach's run in the booth. Thought he was great with JR and Bobby but if the man wanted to wrestle then let em wrestle! He still had a lot in the tank as evident by his WCW run specifically 95-97 Terrible decision on Vince's part

To lose Hogan was definitely a blow to Vince - whether he wants to admit to that or not. Hogan going to WCW was the start of the true ratings war.
I am shocked that Vince wouldn't do anything and everything to have kept Savage in the WWF. When he appeared in WCW it was like another layer of cake.
Then Hall and Nash in 96 was the icing on the cake that WCW needed.
Maybe if Savage had stayed with the WWF, Hall and Nash may have too?? I mean, it sounds like Vince's cheapness too was letting these guys jump ship. Vince was lucky that Austin caught on as fast as he did to turn the tide and have the WWF get popular again.

Can you imagine Vince telling Austin'' No damnit you're staying on as the Ringmaster Pal!'' Back to Mach, You can see here when he announces his departure that there is legit sadness but also he knows he F'ed up this deal BIG time...

Especially with the end results being Savage laying it down for HBK all the time in that feud. Shawn would just love that! Ha ha ha

I wonder if Savage doing all of this for HBK would have made HBK less selfish and more willing to put others over during his rise?
Would have been awesome to see and I think a heel Savage would have been a great challenge for Bret Hart as champion.

You'd think it would but this is 90s HBK we're talking here so I have my doubts... And man heel Mach going after the belt in Vegas....Take my $$$!

The WWF was sooooooo thin on main event heels in early 1993 too. It would have made sense to turn Savage heel again to challenge Bret, but they had already put all of their eggs in the Yoko basket which is understandable given how unique of an attraction he was.

I always thought they could have done the Hulk WM9 angle with Savage.
Think about it: Savage is sitting right there at ring side. They could have built up some heat over the weeks on RAW with some of Fuji's comments, then Yoko could have tried to squash Bret a la Duggan after winning with the salt and Savage flips out at the injustice of Bret having lost the belt in that fashion and now he's going to be flattened, so Savage jumps up from the commentary table and gets involved. Fuji issues the challenge and then Savage gets the quick pin like Hogan did.
I know Savage wasn't the same superhero to Vince as Hulk was, but that would have provided the expected face title win as the climax of the show and unlike Hogan Savage would have actually been willing to wrestle Bret. Let Savage go at Yoko at KOTR given the controversial end, but Savage comes out with the belt even without the clean pin and goes on to face Bret as the big Summerslam main event. Yes, it breaks Vince's tried and tested heel vs face main event model, but come on, surely wrestling fans would much rather have coughed up their cash for Bret vs Savage for the title than Vince jetting in Lex Luger as The Real American 2.0 vs Yokozuna?! The Narcissist gimmick had much more scope for feuds in any case imo.The only downside is that you lose the whole Bret KOTR showcase win and then the Lawler fued.

Savage as IC Champ would have been cool. He could have had more bangers & put over young talent that way easily.
