I've created a few topics over the last week so apologies if I'm clogging up the board, but I just have had a lot of wrestling on my mind entering 2024.
Bruce Prichard commented on his podcast that both he and Pat Patterson pitched the idea of Scott Steiner debuting as a singles competitor and actually winning the 1993 Royal Rumble. The plan was for him to dominate the match as an unknown - with the exception of the fan base that was aware of pro wrestling outside of the WWF - then go on to WrestleMania IX to face the champion.
Do you think this could have worked? Also, Bret Hart was the champ at the time and I doubt they were looking for another face versus face main event for WrestleMania so how could this have even made any sense?

I don't buy that at all. If that was the case, Vince would have split up the Steiner's in 1993 and pushed Scott.
I know he tried to split them up after Wrestlemania X saying "they are having some issues" during tag matches, yet Rick and Scott didn't even sell that by having great tag chemistry. Then they were gone after June of 1994.

I think this was more of a try it and see what Vince thinks. I don't think it was ever really considered; Vince probably brushed it off as quickly as they threw his name out there. This might have been the first rumble since its inception that they probably didn't have an already hand-picked person to win the rumble well before the event happened. I could imagine they threw out a bunch of names. Vince had just decided to go younger and start pushing newer talent, so I could see them throwing out a number of names of wrestlers who were either new or young.

Agreed....if it was ever seriously considered by Vince Id be amazed.

Yoko was the right call but man Scott vs Bret in 93 would have been so much fun.

He would have had a good showing, but maybe not winning the whole thing tbh.

And I bet they never mentioned it again after speaking with Vince!
I wanted Mr Perfect to win that year’s Rumble and be established as a top guy again. I didn’t think about any consequences though, such as main eventing WrestleMania or challenging another face for the world title, so I dunno what I expected to become of it.
I just wanted the Steiners to dominate the tag scene the way they did, but for a bit longer.

Who would have been heel at Mania? i can't see Vince doing another FACE VS FACE Main event. In fat Mania 6 had a massive downgrade in ppv buys from the year before from what I have seen

I think one thing you can see from Prichards podcast is that when the group was Him, Vince, and Patterson they used to have a lot of conversations about things that never went anywhere. End of 92/early 93 they were desperate to find some new main eventers. They had Bret, but they gave shots to Yoko, Bam Bam, Razor, they mentioned Scott being a guy when the Steiners came in but they weren’t interested in splitting. Bruce has even talked about he and Vince talking about pushing Dustin Rhodes as a main eventer at this point, when he wasn’t even in the company.

The conversations back in the writing rooms back then always started with: "What if..." It never really got beyond that.

Think this is more Bruce's late life fantasy booking. Pretty sure the Steiners left WCW cause they wanted to be a team and Watts wanted them split up (which is why Scott was TV champ at the time he left)

However, Rick did suffer a torn pectoral muscle in late 1992 so they were possibly looking at him as a solo project.
