I find it so funny when watching this rumble, that Gino and Bobby make a big deal out of Backlund being 43 years old in this match.
I feel now, that the average wrestler is around 40 - 45 years old and that is considered their prime years now. Where as in 1993, they made it seem like he was an old man trying to reclaim his glory years.

He did seem very old school, so maybe that was their way of explaining it away, plus he did kinda look older than most of the other guys on the roster except Lawler and Flair, who are the same age as him anyway (and Earthquake, I always thought he looked like a retired truck driver - was shocked when I found out his real age!)
People these days don’t seem to look as old as they used to at the same age in previous generations, so you have people like Sheamus, The Miz and Randy Orton who would look like up and comers against Backlund, Flair and Lawler if they matched up at the same age.
And then there’s R-Truth…….

I’m pretty sure that is the same rumble that Monsoon referred to Carlos Colon as a youngster.
I’m guessing was just to emphasise Backlund having been a champion in the 70’s.

The 44 year old "youngster" who looked every bit of 54. 😂 I think what made Backlund appear much older was the fact that he pretty much was gone for the entirety of the Hulkamania era. The guy was the face of the WWF for years before the big popularity boom in the mid 80s, but a LOT had happened since he left which made him really feel like a relic upon returning in 1992. Bob did get a nice appreciation pop for his efforts in that Rumble match. Right before he got tossed by Yokozuna, he eliminated Rick Martel and the crowd popped for sure. You could tell that they were really trying to legitimize him to a new audience by having him out there for so long.
