Continuing on with the Rumble threads since it is Rumble season...
Many people hate 98 Rumble but I actually like it cos of Austin lol, he once again saved another Rumble!!
I'd say at the time it was a letdown but looking back it's not that bad & there's been way worse.
Austin & Foley entering 3 times made this enjoyable. Rock also made it to the final 2. Owen, Honky Tonk Man, Goldust, Shamrock, Mark Henry, Farooq, Funk etc were all in this one.

Predictable as no one but Austin was winning it but still better than 95,96 and 97.
Love the 3 faces of Foley in this one

I think the Rumble match itself is way better than 97 and 99.
I think everyone knew Austin was gonna win, but still, it was just a fun Rumble match.
The Rock was made too that night in that match. Lasting from number 4 all the way to the very end.

Not one of the best, but I was well and truly on the Austin train so as predictable as it was, him winning the Rumble was awesome.
Kane burning the casket blew my mind! The actual casket match though was probably the weakest out of the series of matches that HBK and Undertaker had at the time. It was not bad, but nowhere near as good a match as their epic hell in a cell match.

Really enjoyable Rumble. Loved the build up to it as well. Austin attacking all and sundry without discrimination was such a gripping storyline. Loved when his music hit and the whole match stopped just waiting for him to enter, only for him to come in from the other side and start whooping everyone!

Just watched it the other night...how much of a chump did Ahmed Johnson look here 🤯
He looked like a knob when Kama pushed him. Aistins entrance into the RR was brilliant I thought

It was a decent PPV, not great though. Austin winning was too predictable, no one else had a shot. With HBK and Taker going at it later in the night, the only way they could have put the winner in doubt would have been adding Kane to the match. Very odd that Kane wasn't in the rumble match. It was a decent rumble match, but the winner was clearly going to be Austin. The thing that didn't make any sense was, they were building up that everyone wanted to take a shot at Austin, so when his music hit the entire match stopped and they all watched the entrance, but when Austin came into the ring, they didn't all gang up on him, they just let him eliminate a few people then they all went back to fighting each other. Very odd. This rumble had a lot of similarities to the 1994 Rumble, the casket match involved a lot of guys beating up the Undertaker in a casket match - much like the casket match in 1994. Then in the actual Rumble match, they did the same thing with a person not entering the match making us think it would be Austin, then Austin arrives later in the match - much like Bret in 1994. They did do a good job of building up the Rock at this event. He had a good showing in the match. I liked the final four in the match: Austin, Rock, Dude Love and Faarooq. Mick Foley also had a great outing. I liked them having each of his characters in the rumble match, very unique. Also, very odd that they had 5 members of the nation in the rumble at the same time, and they didn't work together at all made no sense. They should have worked together for a little bit, then turn on one another. Very odd. Again, not a bad rumble, but not one of the better ones either.
None of the matches were that great. Taker/Shawn was probably the best one, but it wasn't their best match with each other. That could have been because of Shawn's injury early in the match. There did seem to be a spot in the match when the pace really slowed down. I didn't notice Shawn grabbing his back, but there were some points where he was definitely wincing in pain. Overall, a good match, but not their best. The Rock vs Shamrock match was good. The Goldust/Vader match was okay, but probably went on a bit too long. The midget match is what it was, nothing great. They did do some impressive stuff, but they also did the same move about 15 times in the match. Sunny looked great.
Overall, an okay PPV. If you loved the attitude era, you'll probably like the PPV.

I really liked the theme to the ppv - Death Race.
The full 3+ minutes version and not the 2 minute one on Youtube.
There was a really good highlights package on Youtube a few years ago for this (also with this theme), and it really looked like a decent ppv. I don't think it's available for viewing anymore though. There is another video to another song though:

In case you don't remember, it was 29 person Rumble because one of the participants didn't come out. Anyway I really enjoyed the Rumble match.
Austin's entrance was cool and I loved how he was portrayed as a major threat in the match.
The 3 faces of Foley was awesome.
The Rock was a made man after that match and I loved how strongly he was booked.
I also loved how The Nation complied with the "Every man for them self" rule, something you very rarely see.
Cactus & Funk starting off the match was awesome too, though I had no idea who number 3 was lol.
I was disappointed how Owen Hart was booked, he should've been one of the last men in the match but instead is put in an angle with Jarrett.

Should've been somewhere in the Main Event (he got good reactions). But I think we know why he was booked poorly. Shame.

To be fair, there was not much they could do with Owen to capitalize on what happened at the end of 1997. He could not get his revenge on Shawn Michaels because he was tied up and ready for Austin. Plus, they needed Triple H to be strong as the new leader of DX so they could not even have him get his revenge by going over on Triple H. It sucks as Owen is awesome, but he needed to beat HBK or Triple H when he came back and they simply were not available.

They should have had Owen chase after Shawn with a vendetta the very next night on Raw after SS 97. Then they should have built Owen up to be on a tear, injuring Triple H for example, jumping Shawn every chance he got and getting escorted out by security. No making fun of him as a nugget, no laughing at him by DX. Owen should have been out for blood. Just like he was when he did eventually come back at the next ppv. He should have been screwed out of the title and then either have one more match at RR, or if that was never going to work, just continue the feud on RAW in amongst the HBK-Taker feud. Then move onto Triple H.

Bret would've been a decent contender if he stuck around. His only other Rumble win was a co-op victory with Lex back in 1994 and he got screwed out of winning it in 1997. If you were able to bet on wrestling in 1998, let's just say that I doubt any casino would even take bets for Austin winning the Rumble. That was an absolute foregone conclusion.
