Austin was the only logical winner tbh & Rock became a star that night. I'd say if Bret was around then maybe he'd have a good shot at winning it. Bret would've been a decent contender if he stuck around. His only other Rumble win was a co-op victory with Lex back in 1994 and he got screwed out of winning it in 1997. If you were able to bet on wrestling in 1998, let's just say that I doubt any casino would even take bets for Austin winning the Rumble. That was an absolute foregone conclusion. Everyone knew Austin was winning in 98 lol, nothing else made sense. It would have been cool for Bret to win it tbh. I'm surprised he didn't get at least one or two wins.

Not trying to discredit HBK, but with everybody right now talking about Cody "finishing his story" we can all admit that Austin beating Bret for the belt at WrestleMania XIV would've been way more significant seeing as that was his ultimate albatross. Finally beating the guy who he had been feuding with for over a year and was 0-2 against on PPV (0-3 if you include Canadian Stampede) would have meant a little bit more. People love to knock Bret for being bitter, but I guarantee you one of the things he regrets most is not being able to be the guy who officially passed the torch to Steve.
