As of late I've been looking into a sorta Mandela Effect that is Bret Hart being in this early Playstation WCW game. I never had nor played this game but use to collect gaming magazines which I vividly recall one having this game featured as a coming attraction at the time. There were images of the game and I remember seeing Bret Hart who was in WWF at the time in one of the screen caps.
Now I recall wondering what exactly is this game? The title vs the world suggests that this would be a WCW game that had interpomotional pull and featured wrestlers of all companies from around the globe. Now I cant find any evidence of this mystery and have since lost the magazines. Anyone here recall any of this or am I falsely recalling something that never was?

Not finding any photos from a quick search on goggle. VS the World was the American localization of Virtual Pro Wrestling. Not sure if Bret had a character in those games or not.
I only have experience with Fire Pro returns on the PS2 as far me playing a game aside from the usual wrestling games released in USA.
I’ll see if I can dig anything up for Bret being in Virtual Pro cause now I’m curious.
The wrestlers in VS were based on their real life counterparts as best as I remember.

No he could not have been in the game because it was released as per below: JP: September 13, 1996 US: March 28, 1997 EU: December 1997 He was not in WCW until end of 1997. The rest of the non-WCW roster is made up of real Puroresu wrestlers at the time but because they did not have the rights to their names they made faux gimmicks. You recall him being in the game because many of the portraits used for roster look a bit like him, here they are: WCW World Tour PSX rosterThis was the only PSX game developed by AKI (the rest for were for N64) Recently the AKI N64 games have been hacked and moded. This basis you may have come across a screenshot of the N64 equivalent (VPW1) of this game which has been moded to include Hitman and other WWF rasslors at the time: During the same time of release Bret was to busy kicking American butt on WWF In Your House, released as per below: US: October 31, 1996 EU: November 8, 1996

Thanks for the responses guys. Man I wish I had kept that magazine. It had to be either Electronic Gaming Monthly or Gampro magazine. I can almost promise that there was a screen shot of Bret in ring battling an opponent within the review of the article. Again this was around 1996 and I know Bret was not in the WCW at the time so the game really peaked my interest for that reason. In fact I remember thinking this would be the only way to have WWF vs WCW at the time.
I know I cant be confusing the game with something else. It even had images of the cover art on the page like Stings Crow look which was new at the time. Either this was an early screen shot of the prototype of the game that was later removed due to licensing issues with Bret or something else. I'm just certain it was there. I do not remember what the contents of the article was.

Here's something that really cheesed me off about that game. DDP was becoming red hot at the point in time. He was featured on the cover art, as well as the disc label art (in both places, the pic featured him giving a Diamond Cutter to Eddie Guerrero). But was he in the actual game at all? No.

No he could not have been in the game because it was released as per below: JP: September 13, 1996 That release date is of the Japanese game Virtual Pro Wrestling. WCW vs The World was the English language version, with a slightly different roster because of the different license. WCW vs The World itself was never released in Japan.

I do not remember what the contents of the article was. I’ve just looked through EGM issues from December 1996 (which is the earliest possible issue they could’ve had images of Sting in white and black face paint) to April 1997 (which was the issue where they reviewed the game). There are a few mentions of WCW vs The World - a couple of preview articles, an ad, a review and a competition. No Bret Hart, but one of the screenshots does have a guy in a pink outfit, and that plus the “vs The World” concept may have confused you as a kid? Pictures of them here: imgur.com/a/gtI08LoMost of these issues did have Bret Hart in ads for WWF In Your House, if that makes a difference. GamePro, not much, just one preview article and the review. The review does have an image of crow Sting on the page but no Bret: imgur.com/a/MH3YOiQ

It looks like the article I remember but definitely remember seeing Bret in the full black with pink and white trim attire. It's possible it was faulty memory on my part because at this time I didn't have a PlayStation and never further researched whether Bret was in the game or not. Regardless I'm satisfied with the fact that I could have been mistaken and this topic will never lead to anything. Thanks again.

Anytime this has happened to me in the past , I have discovered that likely, you saw an early preview for WWF Warzone (WWF 98) in the same magazine as WCW World Tour and are mixing up the memory. I have done that so many times but who knows. It’s also very possible at that time that they printed a picture of Bret in Warzone accidentally in the World Tour screens. The strategy guides would have errors all the time.
Edit: WOW though, the above post HAS to be what you remember. The guy flipping off the top rope absolutely looks like Bret.

Definitely was no mix up with Warzone as I had the PS by the time that game came out and had a copy of it. The post from Stephen with the screenshots of the magazine was very similar to what I remember but the photo of Bret was unmistakable and I'm still convinced of what I saw.
