So this was a match I was dreading. I hadn't watched it since the Raw special that aired in June of 2007 for the memorial show.
As weird as it is, when that happened in 2007, I compare it (at least to me) to a relationship ending. You can't go back and look at the pictures when it ends, cause it is so surreal and hurts. But time heals all wounds.
Not saying what Chris Benoit did is unforgivable, it's not. But I watched the show tonight almost as I did in 2004 and the times after it. I enjoyed seeing Chris Benoit in the ring wrestling and I enjoyed the victory he had. It was nice to see that event again to be honest.
As for other things in that Rumble match...
- The Undertaker gong hit to distract Kane was great! - The way Mick Foley came to the ring and the reaction Randy Orton had to his theme song sold it greatly. - Goldberg being a bad ass only to be taken out by Brock Lesnar and then eliminated by Kurt Angle - John Cena looking like he blew out his knee when Big Show eliminated him... Ouch!
It was just a really fun enjoyable Royal Rumble match and one I was happy to watch again.
The Chris Benoit chase to the World Title and the World Title reign in 2004 is one of my most favourite eras for WWE. I haven't watched that era since 2007. It was nice to see a bit of it again tonight. I guess it's true what they say, time really does heal all wounds. I will never forgive Benoit for what he did to his family and himself, but I can at least enjoy his wrestling once again.
Anyone else enjoy the 2004 Royal Rumble match??

One of the GOATS. This match was just epic all around. A real classic Rumble 10000%.

For me, the Benoit win was one for the boys and for the hardcore fans. He lacked the charisma, personality and look to enjoy a run on the top akin to a Hogan or Austin, but felt it was great for him to get the nod as a show of respect for all he put in to the wrestling business. The rumble win and subsequent WM win was a tremendous story.

Putting the Benoit stuff aside, 2004 was a mid-to above average Rumble. WWE as a whole for me was kind of in a weird spot towards the end of 03 going into 04.
Most of 2003 was spent on bulky/veterans - Goldberg, Nash, Triple H, Steiner, Lesnar, Big Show, Undertaker, Hogan and then 2004 pretty much became the smaller wrestlers and youth show - Benoit, Guerrero, Angle, Jericho, Michaels, Edge, Mysterio, Orton, Cena, etc... it was a really interesting shift in direction for the company to happen so quickly.
The aforementioned stuff was great but also had some low points - Ernest Millers awful debut that lasted all of what? 1 week? Also had a lot of directionless guys that got tossed out super quick - Matt Hardy, Tajiri, Rhyno, A-Train, Benjamin, Rico, Hurricane, Bradshaw.
Def wasnt above the previous 3 rumbles but still decent.
