I agree with you. Part of the charm of the Rumble to me was the idea that anybody could win and get a match at WrestleMania. As I have gotten older, obviously I realize that’s not the case as the top draw is going to win for clear reasons.
What I think would be an interesting discussion is, what if the Rumble Winner DIDN'T contend for a title at Mania? Would that make it more interesting, less interesting? It would give more options for creativity and winners.
What if the rumble was for the something like the MITB briefcase? I do feel like it needs to evolve.

Did you want Golga to win the Rumble in ‘99? There’s a difference between asking for the Rumble to be a little less predictable, and having it be “random.” You can’t have the winner be completely random. They have plans in place, and with a WM main event on the line, you can’t just have anybody win. It’s fun to see the current midcard guys have a shot, but you can’t expect Melo or Ivar to win.
Now if you’re talking about being less predictable, I actually thought this years Rumble wasn’t that predictable. I watched with a group of five guys and we predicted 3 different people: Cody, CM Punk, and Gunther. I think that’s pretty good. Definitely way less predictable than last years Rumble.
I’ve been watching since 2002 and I never once thought “anybody” could win.

I think they did a good job this year with highlighting multiple people having a reason to win, and I think they noticed it worked last year with Lita. Giving multiple people going into the match a clear path as to what they would do IF they won, made it seem like more than one person was a contender.

Bron wasn’t shocking. He was being built at that time. He and Jericho were the favorites to win that Rumble. I think people who mentions “unpredictable winners” are referring to wins such as Shawn Michaels, Chris Benoit, Rey Mysterio, Shinsuke Nakamura, etc… but even then, it’s not the majority of winners. Just more highly receptive winners because of the “shock value” of it. And Bron Breakker sucks. Dude is literally just a more athletic Goldberg. I’ve still yet to watch a match of his and be impressed with his wrestling ability. Dudes strong and energetic… meh. Where did this Bron stuff come from? I didn't mention him once. Damnit! I meant Sheamus. 🤣🤣

By the way… tossing in LA Knight, AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Logan Paul, etc. wouldn’t have made a difference. As neither of those 4 were winning the Rumble.

Better competitors always reign Supreme. Unless it's 1999. Or alot of other years for that matter.
But booking sense, yeah.

This years winner was a surprise. I thought for sure Punk was winning.
I would say Nakamura winning was a shocker, he was basically an upper carder and the win did nothing for him.

I thought Punk was winning tbh. I didn't think Cody was getting back to back Rumbles... that didn't happen since Austin 26 years ago & I really thought that it wasn't happening ever again. Nakamura winning was actually a surprise and a very big moment. I thought Reigns had it.

I'd say Cody/Punk/Gunther and slyly Drew were the only options. That's 4 possible winners right there, which is better than 1 or 2 possible winners.

I think what the OP is saying is that as fun as Rumbles are, you already know before it starts that 25 of them have NO chance. So in a way, it's pointless. Luckily the WWE makes it entertaining and fun. But yeah ... Ivar might be cool and all to some and he's a big boy, but we all know he's not winning. The way they do it is fine, but say you have 10 guys that could win. That would make it better. Imagine if Logan, Owens, Reigns, AJ, Randy, Knight, etc. were all in it as well. The illusion of "anyone can win" is a lie ... but again, Rumbles are entertaining so it doesn't matter. More than 2 people being built as strong, competent contenders at the same time? Blasphemy, I say! Preach.

it has to make booking sense Which is why it needs to evolve if it ever gets stale to guys like us who are smarter than the average fan. It's always going to be won by the guy who is lined up for WM. Thankfully it hasn't become stale for me yet. Gunther was never going to win this year. It was Punk or Cody the day Punk signed.

Taker in 07 was a big shocker. I thought it was HBK,Edge or Orton for sure.

I’ve been watching the WwF since 89/90 and the rumble winners have always been pretty known except a handful of years.

Taker in 07 was a big shocker. I thought it was HBK,Edge or Orton for sure. I had a gut feeling that Taker would win that Rumble. It was his first one since 03 and when I saw him advertised for the match I had couldn't help but wonder if this was the one he would finally win.

I think he was easily one of the favs to win it, but I really thought for sure it was HBK,Edge or Orton. It was great seeing Taker win the Rumble finally.

Let's test this theory and have a random Rumble winner.
2025 Royal Rumble winner Ivar
