Yeah I would say the ones that don't like the butterfly joints are in a very small group.
I prefer the butterfly joints, but I could take it or leave it with toe articulation or drop down hips that only would serve some wrestlers.

The thing I've noticed with the butterfly joints is that sometimes they seem awkward. Roman's first UE, I could never make the arms look right on him. His shoulders were way WAY too broad and with the butterfly joints no matter what angle I put his arms in, it looked like his shoulders were dislocated under the shirt. I don't have the new one to compare but that Roman alone made me really sour on butterfly joints. Also, the drop down hips just feel so fragile to me. I'm terrified I'm gonna snap them. And the toe articulation, seeing as how I'm just posing my figures, all they do is make the feet harder to stand on.

Yeah they seem to be refining the shoulders as they go, Hollywood for example will have the newer version as it does look better. It's def hit or miss, but until they build a bigger catalog of torsos we are kinda stuck with what we got ATM
