Okay, this is something I’ve always wanted to get everyone’s opinion on and was afraid I’d get flamed. I remember Wrestlemania 3 and watching it in my living room when I was in Kindergarten. I remember it being great at that age, I remember the buildup and everything…and I remember cheering when Steamboat beat Savage for the belt because Rickey was the goodguy and Savage was the bad guy, he hurt Ricky’s neck (that was what I thought he hurt in my 5 year old eyes). So of course. But I distinctly remember it was absolutely eclipsed at the time by…of course…Hogan and Andre…but ALSO I thought at the time was a bigger deal…Piper and Adonis, as it was Piper’s “Retirement match”. At the time I always looked at Roddy Piper as a bigger deal than Macho. When I’d play with my LJNs and Macho was a bad guy. I’d have Piper beat Macho. Okay enough sidetracking. But am I the only one that at the time felt like Piper Vs Adonis was a higher profile match? I know it seems like a few years after as I got older it wasn’t. But at the time it seemed like Savage Steamboat took a backseat to those two matches, and at times Jake vs. Honky. Also, remember, I was 5 years old…I wasn’t all about “workrate” and all that, and Macho Man didn’t become a favorite of mine of course like any little kid at the time until he “turned into a good guy”. Any of my fellow old heads remember this being the case, or was this just me?

all those matches were special and important, but hulk/andre was at the top
the others were pushed and promoted pretty equal imo. i wa so ECITED for the whole event. even the bulldgos and the danny davis thing ws pushed hard.
savage/dragon didnt necessarily take a back seat to any of them besides hulk/andre
but i felt important wise it went like this:
hulk/andre piper/adonis savage/steamboat jake/honky bulldogs/harts

Man, it all felt so magical back then. Watching through a child’s eyes. I wasn’t jaded. It was beautiful.

True it wasn’t the biggest match on the card. I would say as far as top billed it was… Hulk/Andre Piper/Adonis Savage/Steamboat Hart Foundation/British Bulldogs Jake/HTM
but it was the best match on the show. I would rank them in this order… Savage/Steamboat Piper/Adonis Hart Foundation/British Bulldogs Hogan/Andre Jake/HTM

Just looking back at it and the build up for that match and for Wrestlemania III, I say that Savage vs. Steamboat was the sleeper of the bunch.
Nobody was thinking, "wow, Koko B. Ware vs. Butch Reed is gonna be a classic!" But Savage could go and so could Steamboat, and the build up with the story line for this match was months in the making. Way back in early November I believe is when the match aired on Superstars where Savage crushed Steamboat's throat.
Hogan vs. Andre was the big deal of the night. Piper vs. Adonis had a build up from around September 1986 so it had the next big feel. Probably why it was the main event of the first half of WM III Roberts vs. Honky was very recent in how Honky slammed a guitar over Jake's head so you were stoked to see them go at it and it made Jake an instant good guy
But Steamboat vs. Savage you knew had a story, but I don't think anyone realized or thought that it was going to be such a mat classic that it was. Though, I think we all didn't know either that these two were having that style of match on house shows for months before WM III happened so they kind of knew the spots perfectly which helped. But back then, we didn't know that.
I would put Bulldogs/Santana vs. Harts/Davis as fifth in that list as a match that people were excited to see from the build up of Davis being a heel referee and causing the Bulldogs to lose the Tag Titles just a month or so earlier.

Yeah I'd say it was 3rd on the hype list behind the main event and Piper's ''retirement''
Still my fav Mania of all time and I know that will never change

If Flair had retained the WWF Title and defeated Randy Savage at Wrestlemania 8 would that be your favourite Mania of all time over WM III??

Not the biggest match or most hyped but easily the best on WM3.

My Easter break from school in 1991 was spent watching the Silver Vision WrestleMania III VHS and playing with all the 99p LJN Bendies ingot from a department store called What Everyone Wants.
It's just a really fun show.

Oh yeah, as we look back it was the best match of the night hands down. As I said, I was compelled watching it, and I was a hyperactive 5 year old with an attention span to match haha. So that says something.

It's just a really fun show. My easter break/Spring Break was ALSO spent watching Coliseum Video (of course Silver Vision was the distributor in your country) and NWA/WCW tapes. I didn't play with my LJNs TOO much at that point as I had mostly moved to my Hasbros and Galoobs by that point. And they had just released Piper, Hacksaw, Dusty, Snuka, a better Warrior (Not a Jumper) Purple Savage, and A beefier Dibiase that I just got for Easter, along with new Turtle figures like the Foot Earth Driller. I actually remember that week being rainy so I had my friends over most of the week. They even ended up spending the last 3 days at my house and we read comics, played video Games, and watched wrestling most of the day...and movies, I want to say we went and saw the Second Ninja Turtles Movie.
