In the last few years I’ve watched a bit of WCW but never really watched it at the time. One thing I’ve been aware of (not sure how true) was Bischoff wanting to push the NWO as its own promotion within a promotion. All sources I have seen point to Bischoff’s attempts with NWO Souled Out and NWO Nitro (opposite WCW Thunder) being tried out and subsequently dismissal due to poor initial numbers.
I guess my question to you guys is with perseverance, could the NWO have created an exclusive brand within the confines of WCW, complete with its own roster and exclusive TV & PPV shows?
Being a WWF loyalist through the 90’s I recognise I probably don’t appreciate just how over the NWO was. Like everything else in wrestling, the group had a shelf life, but with the right tweaking, the NWO could have moved away from its “outlaw” status and grown in to its own brand. WCW was bloated with talent and could have sustained two exclusive pseudo-promotions under the Turner umbrella. Between Hogan, Savage, Piper, Flair, Bret, DDP, Steiner, the Outsiders and others, there was enough main event talent to sustain exclusive brands. One show could be exclusive for cruiserweight action and when the staleness started kicking in, there was an inbuilt opportunity for talent trading akin to the Raw/Smackdown draft. There was an opportunity to build new talent for the future to ultimately take over the old guard (hypothetically anyway). A Jericho type could slowly be building his reputation on the Thursday show, free from politicking, whilst Hogan et al are ripping it up on Monday nights.
Any one got any thoughts on this?
