I don't why they wasted Flair vs Perfect on Raw, when they could have built it over a much longer period for WM9, an event that desperately needed the boost of Flair. I know he was leaving the company (a daft mistake by Vince), but they could have got him to stay on surely until April 4. he was still wrestling until February for the company after all, and was hardly going to turn up his nose at the cut of WWF PPV income, surely? I've always said how I wish they cut a deal with Naitch to get em through to Mania for the loser leaves town match. It def deserved that big spotlight 100%
The whole handling of Flair was ridiculous in hindsight.
You're a company that needs to transition away from the steroid champions, you spend all that effort poaching the main man - who is in no way a steroid freak - from your rivals, you have him do a huge showcase victory of the title at the Rumble, then immediately see him drop the title in really his first challenge, don't even bother organising a match for him at the next PPV so he just ends up wandering around at ringside to mass confusion, then you give him the belt back at a house show the very next night, don't have him do anything of note for 6 weeks as champion and then suddenly lose the belt at a house show to a guy he had no previous heat with (If they wanted Flair to drop the belt to Bret, why not at least build it for the title match at the Rumble. Perfect could have tried to interfere and cost Flair the belt, which ignites their feud.)
After one more PPV appearance - again not in the final match of the show - he gets loses a TV match to leave the company, in an era where little of great importance ever happened on Raw. Meanwhile the company prepares for a series of PPV main events with.... Yokozuna...

They had to drop the belt to Bret, quickly. Flair got injured in a match with Warrior and was having a hard time with his equilibrium. Flair was looking to cash out on his Lloyd's of London insurance policy, he thought his career was over. Then, after dropping the belt to Bret, his inner ear issue just went away. When he let Vince know he was ready to come back, Vince said he was going to go in a different direction (new generation). Apparently, Flair and Vince had a deal that if Vince wasn't going to use him on top then Flair could opt out of their agreement. Flair put in his notification to leave in the fall/winter of 1992 so he could go back to WCW. Shame though, as I agree with you. Ideally, after they had to drop the belt to Bret because of the injury, once they found out Flair was okay, Flair should have been Bret's opponent at the Royal Rumble. Perfect could have cost Flair the chance to regain the title, then they could have set up the loser leave town match at WM9. Though, it would have been odd for them to have Flair and Hogan on the same WrestleMania card, twice, and not have them wrestle. They could have even done the loser leave town match with Flair & Hogan at WM9.

I've heard about the injury in the years since, but never knew if it was legit back then or just something Flair had devised in the meantime to cover for his somewhat lame ending as champion, especially as Bret used to like criticising Flair's status as an all-time great on the basis of their match in Saskatoon, so it kinda suits Flair to promote the injury excuse (not that the match itself is actually at all bad imo).
Ultimately, I think Vince just wasn't sold on Flair after seeing the declining buy rates and attendances and it was easy to just pin that on Flair not being a good draw and to spin the wheel and hope things would pick up with Bret than to realise how much talent the company had lost during 1992. Vince was also furious at Flair for blading at WM8 (ironic that Bret was then lined up as the more reliable champion when he had bladed first on that show).
If Flair's injury was indeed genuine then they could have just given him a little recovery time from ring work as a champion to see if things would improve, let him just cut promos for a month, and then moved forward with him had they really wanted to. I mean the Survivor Series was the next big PPV and they certainly didn't necessarily need a singles match for the title there.

To go with yours: Hogan vs. Orndorff - WM3 (they deserved the big stage, but I wouldn't change Hogan/Andre) Rockers vs. Brain Busters - WM5 Garvin vs. Hammer - WM6 Chico vs. Martel - WM6 LOD vs. Demolition - WM7 Rockers vs. Power & Glory - WM7 Dusty vs. DiBiase - WM7 LOD vs. Natural Disasters - WM8 Great choices. My main one is Macho vs Jake @ WM8. the match felt rushed at SNME....

They were running iron mans on the house shows so they couldve done a 30 minute match there. Let Razor in the Rumble and have a decent showing in that

I mean the Survivor Series was the next big PPV and they certainly didn't necessarily need a singles match for the title there. I would imagine it was serious, especially if he was going to cash out his Lloyd's of London policy. For them rushing to put the belt on Bret, I think they really thought the injury was that bad, and they wanted the belt off of him as soon as possible. I guess they didn't want him coming out as champion for the next month or so, only to end up not being able to wrestle again and then have to drop/forfeit the belt to no one. They could have done another winner of the Royal Rumble becomes champion, but maybe they didn't want to do that two years in a row. Not only did Vince not like the blading incident at WM8 for Flair, but I've heard he was really pissed at Macho and Flair over the title switch match in September. He seemed to have soured on both guys, and that was probably when he decided to go younger. As for the blading incident, the Bret/Piper one seemed to have been done better while Flair's was caught on camera.

Heenan tries to come down and aide Flair, so Perfect comes out and runs Heenan off. Flair ends up losing to Bret. Flair then blames his loss on Perfect which sets up the loser leaves town match - which should have happened at WM9. This would have put Razor in the Rumble match, the final four should have been Razor, Perfect, Macho and Yoko.

Great match no doubt but for the history the two had from Perfect being his consultant since late 91 until the fallout a year later it was a story tailor made for Mania

Definitely deserved a WrestleMania match. But I wonder if Flair putting in his notice forced them to do it on that date (early January). I've also heard that they wanted it on Raw to show fans that this was going to be different than Superstars or Wrestling Challenge. It also added to the "anything can happen live" tag line.

Makes sense. Just wish Vince and co struck a deal with em to stick around until Mania Crazy looking back Flair's first run there and he only gets one Mania appearance. But hey still an enjoyable run for what it was

Yup..def were going for that vibe. Prichard has said that on the podcast too. looking back? Raw felt different...you had the reduction of jobber matches and names wrestling each other weekly from the get go. Felt a lot different.

2 that always comes to mind first are... Piper/Rude at WM VI- I know the feud started the previous August but with the talent these two had I think they couldve pulled it off. Have em both eliminate each other from the Rumble with it being settled once and for all inside the blue bars at SkyDome. Wouldve been helluva better than what they got Mach/Jake WM VIII- another feud that started the previous Summer and another that couldve ended inside the cage on the big stage. Now I'm not complaining as we got Mach feuding with Naitch after this but man this is another one that deserved it. The finale at SNME did this feud no justice thats for sure Taker-Jake seemed way rushed too. Ending Savage-Roberts at Mania would have been much better.
