Howdy folks,
I thought we could have some fun today talking about The Ultimate WARRIOR!!!!!! Look, I get that some people hate him and think that he sucks, hey you do you, I would never argue with someone and tell them that their opinion is wrong. If we all loved the same things, life would be pretty boring! There are plenty of popular wrestlers that have never clicked with me.
Anyway, I wanted to try and get some positive discussion about the Ultimate Warrior. I honestly do not think I would be a wrestling fan today if it was not for the Ultimate Warrior. When I stated watching in 1989 he was the guy I gravitated to and his quest to become the Intercontinental Champion was the first wrestling angle that I was invested in. As a character for a kid at the time, he was near perfect. He looked cool, he was intense and he did this high power moves that looked like they hurt.... which we would later learn the reason his stuff looked like it hurt was that a lot of the time it did!
Still, I think that the Ultimate Warrior is actually underrated as a wrestler, yeah I said that. He mostly had his squash matches, but for the five minutes they would last, with three of that being the entrance and post match celebration, it was the most awesome and exciting thing on the show for me. When he would have actual matches, he has far more good matches to his name than people like to give him credit for. Sure, people will say that Rude, Savage, Hogan, Perfect and more carried him, but it takes two to tango. When he was put in a situation that had back and forth action, more often than not he delivered and would have exciting matches. DO not get me wrong, he has a few stinkers to his name, but his character, look and entrance at least added excitement even to the most awkward matches that he would have.
His stuff with Savage is my all time favorite. From him beating the Macho King, refusing a rematch, Savage costing him the title and then the match at WrestleMania, it is some of my favorite story telling in wrestling history.
I was only ever able to see Warrior live once and that was at SummerSlam 92, where I was sat about a million miles back from the ring on the floor so I had to watch most of the show on the screen above the ring. Still, it was so awesome to see him there and I wish that I could have seen him live at a house show, even it would have been a squash match.
He was far from a perfect man and there are many who hate him, but despite his relatively short run, he left an impact on the WWF/E that not many others can match.
What are some of your favorite Warrior moments and matches

love warrior! he's in my top 3, behind hogan & mr perfect only! my only knock on him is him leaving several different times (bums me out every time) and no activity from 1992 til 1996. he put on some great matches for who/what he was in the ring. esp after running down and shaking ropes and using all that energy before the match even started. some of my fav matches of his are vs hogan (wm6), vs hercules (wm4), winning IC belt vs honky, losing ic belt to rude, vs rude cage match (slsma90), vs HHH (wm12), warriors vs perfect team, and my fav match of his is vs slaughter at rr91, even tho he lost this was a HELL of a match! wish he won royal rumble 1988 or 1990!

Loved his match with Rude at WM5. His promos were always enjoyable, as the saying goes he was crazier than a tin sh*thouse rat!! (And I mean that as a compliment).
I think that it was a wrong call to make him heavyweight champion, he was a much better special attraction!
I have just watched Hogan v Sid at WM8 what a response Warrior got in the run in.

One of my top 5 favorites of all time, I started watching wrestling around the time he debuted in the WWF. I was upset when he would either keep getting fired or quit but would understand why later on. He was absolutely perfect for the era of wrestling he came up in but would've flopped hard in any other era.

I liked the Warrior. But then again I was a kid, and Warrior came off super colourful and exciting when he was in the ring.
Was he a great wrestler?? No. Not at all. But I was more excited to see Warrior than say Tito Santana or Ronnie Garvin during that era, that's for sure! Ha ha ha

Warrior was a great fit for the WWF in his initial run and nobody can deny how over he was. The fact that Hogan had to let him pin him clean for the title shows his status. Yet he's one of the first guys you think of when they talk about wrestlers who don't actually need a title belt around their waist to be over and to have the crowd utterly invested in their matches.
That's why I think it was the wrong move to have immediately put him into the title match at Summerslam 1992. They could have kept him away from Sid on the house shows and then had the big showdown there, or if Sid quit anyway, then just use the Shango feud for Summerslam. That crowd would have gone 100% nuts for that, and Warrior could have done his favourite squash-type match and brought down the house. Instead, you had a large section of the crowd behind Warrior, but it also caused a confused reaction toward Savage, who would have got a massive pop had he just faced Flair instead.
Regardless of him being fired in 1992 or not, I think it would have been ever-diminishing returns for him as the 90s progressed as he really belonged to a different era and I don't think he was ever going to be prepared to change and go heel or anything to breathe new life into his gimmick. He was very much a one trick pony in that respect, but his "trick" was extremely successful for him, the company and thousands of fans for a good deal of time.

I was able to see Warrior live many times, even at Wrestlemania 8, and every single time the whole Rosemont Horizon would feel like it was going to explode from the cheers. He was perfect for the time but not after 92.

Fav matches were def with Rude and Mach with his best TV match being with DiBiase on the Main Event.

Big fan of the Warrior when I was getting into wrestling. He was one of the two "immortals" that the WWF was showcasing, and I liked him a lot more than Hogan. No, he wasn't the greatest wrestler, but he was over more than most guys in wrestling history. When you put him in the ring with someone who could bump for him, he did well. His feud with the Macho King Randy Savage is still to this day one of my all-time favorites. His match with Randy at WM7 is still in my top 5 favorite matches of all-time. He was also one of the coolest looking wrestlers. Shame he didn't care for the business as much as others, I think if he tried a little harder to work with other guys who knew the business better, he could have been to the early/mid 90s WWF what Hogan was to the 80s.

Not a mega fan but nobody can deny his stardom.
I think his best match was v Rude at Summerslam 89. I'm always VERY entertained by that. Also logically? I think he should have won RR90. Ive always thought that....

Plus I already have WM7 as the 5th match how many matches do you want me to list where that neon cowboy hat wearing clown had to be carried by Warrior just to have a good match?
