Howdy folks,
I just saw that one of the boutique wrestling figure companies is making a Sean Mooney retro figure and it sparked a few memories of him. He was a staple during the years I first started watching wrestling and I always thought that he was fun. He was always able to play the straight man, but he could get in on the wacky stuff too on Prime Time Wrestling. I remember when he was on a honeymoon and Bobby Heenan sent cameras to spy on him and the caught him and his wife in bed and they had the WWF bedding set, I do not know why, I just think that is hilarious. He was always a good sport when he was involved in these skits and he did a fun job.
He also came across as a legit sportscaster when he would do the event center things, when Sean Mooney was telling you about a PPV or something that had happened the week prior or whatever, he always sold it as a major deal.
I was not a huge fan of his play by play work. I mostly remember him from the various WWF Home Video releases where he would do commentary on the matches and he always called it as if it were a real sporting contest. To be fair, if he had a good guy to play off against he was fine.
What are your thoughts on Sean Mooney?

I liked him. He was best as the "newscaster" in the production room with all the little TVs behind him. He was okay as an announcer, but not great. I thought he and Lord Alfred worked well together.

I liked him on Superstars and Challenge in the "newsroom" hyping the events and introducing the wrestlers who are gonna be speaking.
I didn't care for his commentary on WWF Coliseum Videos though. It was okay, but I was so used to hearing Gino, Jesse, Vince and Bobby that to hear Sean and Lord Alfred call a match to me took away how great the match was.

Who?
He was best with the news report stuff and hype man on the PPV pre shows. His run with Alfred in the booth wasnt bad. Not the best but certainly not the worst

Always reminded of the "event center" segments and as a host of Coliseum Videos when I hear or see him. Good nostalgia

I would have liked to have seen Graig DeGeorge have a longer run than he had. The only thing I didn't like about Sean Mooney in the beginning,he talked so loud. Very annoying, but after a while he began to talk in a normal volume and that's when I started to like him.

I think Pettengill worked for the New Generation era though more so than Sean Mooney. Somehow, Todd fit that era. I can't say the same about Sean Mooney. He represents the 1989 - 1992 era so perfectly!

Todd def fit the zaniness of NG Just keep em away from the booth. Terrible during that run on Action Zone

I liked him.
He brought a real sports broadcasting professionalism to the product with the events centre and his interviews. By contrast, I found the goofy inserts they had him get involved with on the home videos often a bit too daft and he was pretty wooden when "acting" in such skits. He was definitely better when he just stuck to the straight guy.
His commentary with Hayes is obviously a good step down from Monsoon and Heenan, but that's probably why they mostly only did matches on Prime Time Wrestling, which was very much seen as a "C show" behind Superstars and Challenge. Many of those home video matches are lifted straight from Prime Time. Although he and Hayes worked pretty well in tandem, Hayes can't have been the easiest partner to deal with as he does tend to stumble around and go off on random tangents (or simply spent an entire match lusting after Sherri). Mooney's commentary might have been notably stronger with a master like Heenan at his side to play off instead.
He had a podcast a few years ago that wasn't too bad, and had potential. I think he ran out of guests pretty quickly though and couldn't get the real stars of the company to get involved. It was clear however just how brutal his work schedule must have been with all those event centre inserts having to be made for every single region. It sounds like he pretty much lived in the TV production studio.

I really liked Sean, and he was just a great guy to meet in person. I was able to meet a few times over the years when he was in the WWF. I like that they brought him back a few times for dvds and specials. He's a newscaster now but unfortunately he made it to Youtube with this blooper! Poor guy!
