I asked about this a few years ago and got the same response. I was totally shocked it wasn't long tights. That would have made sense given Macho would have worn long tights for about a year but the 1991 series mostly was based on late 89 when he had the purple tights. In a Jakks-like cost cutting measure they just repainted Macho #2.
Funny Hasbro did reverse Dibiase 1 and 2. I think 2 was planned first but he was most famous for the black suit and they went with that. Since he was still very much over in 91, they just added the green suit. The original prototype era for series 1 shows a drawing of his move 2 which led me to think green suit was the original plan.

The only date I’m seeing on this is January 3, 1990:   Not sure if that is helpful. In regards to Macho, that image was shown in the February 91 issue of WWF Magazine. I didn’t want to go through the hassle of hooking up my scanner so I took a few images with my phone. Up close like that it's more clear. You can see the gold knee pads and his skin tone.
What's really a shame is the 1992 version didn't see his colorful tights. Hasbro really cut corners with that but it's hard to blame them. What they lacked in Macho Man they really made up in pumping out a lot of talent. Though maybe they could have done without the minis.
I think it's the 1990 Hasbro catalog that has the prototype of black suit Ted pictured and underneath they have a small drawing of him in the "stomp" feature. It just seemed a bit odd to release the green suit second as it was the suit he wore before black/gold 1989 to 1992.

I've always wondered if the Series 3 Macho Man was a last-minute replacement, and they really didn't have time to update anything more than the Macho Man on the back of the trunks. They also quickly changed Tugboat to Typhoon, but they had to repaint that one because of the character change. I could have sworn I've seen the reference photo image of Dino Bravo, not the drawing/sketch but the little photos that they used as a reference (like the ones on the IRS sketch image below); I wonder if he was the one that Savage replaced. Dino would have fit in with that wave since it was originally including Earthquake, Hogan, and Tugboat. Dino was the other wrestler in that feud. Since he wasn't in the company in 1992, and Tugboat was changed to Typhoon, I wonder if they just took his figure out and put Macho Man in his place. Are you saying that the Series 1 figure was supposed to be painted in green instead of black, or that the series 2 mold was supposed to be the Series 1 figure and the Series 1 mold was supposed to be the Series 2 figure? The series 1 Hasbro figures came out in the spring of 1990, if the sketch was dated January 1990, I doubt that they would have been able to sculpt the entire figure and have it ready for production and sale in three months. |

Shame they couldn't just paint the legs with long tights. This is an interesting theory. I’ve heard a few lists of guys who were supposedly going to be made, but haven’t ever seen much proof of them. But if there’s a Dino slide, it’s got to be a possibility as he’d definitely fit in a series with those guys who mentioned from the summerslam main event. |

Not sure about long tights macho but never saw any slides, sketches, preproduction mention of Dino bravo, just fan boy rumors.
